Hopper Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 vanish 2 & 4 lb, I have no problem finding it at bass pro in tulsa. Gregg The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing.
Gallagher Posted November 23, 2010 Author Posted November 23, 2010 I too have PLine 2Lb. I was reluctant to use is as I believe it equates to be 8X,... anyone know if this is true? The Rio 7X I have is 2.5 Lb. As far as the Vanish is concerned,... maybe the manufacturer should have considered a different name other than "Vanish", too bad it's getting hard to find! Carry out what you carry in...
Jason R. Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I too have PLine 2Lb. I use almost nothing but Rio- tippet and leaders, Ive used floro, mono, extreme tippet (which is just braid) and floro max. Ive also used alot of orvis. The rio works well for me- in fact, I feel like its kinda all the same except some cheap sportsmans warehouse stuff I used once. You do get a bad spool sometime- I couldnt begin to explain why that is but the ones I have that were bad were all old spools I found in a closet- might have been age or heat- who knows? It is nice to blame break offs on your tippet though- I do it all the time. http://flyinthesouth.com/
chub minnow Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 If that 7x fluorocarbon spends any time in the hot car it's done. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on, but now I always (almost) bring my vest inside at the end of the day. This seems to have really extended the life those fine 6x and 7x fluro tippets.
flyrodman Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I personally like the orvis SS. i have gone through 3 spools of 6x i like it so much Luke Walz
stlfisher Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I am now using Orvis Mirage and it is great. I don't know if I just bought a couple of bad spools of RIO, but the difference has been night and day for me.
dgames Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I use rio and have been happy with it. I do most of my fishing with a dry fly & dropper rig, usually with some kind of bead head midge. I use mono with 5 or 6x tippet to the dry fly. I use 7x fluoro from the dry fly hook bend to my midge. I occasionally have breakoffs on the hookset (like maybe 1 out of 25 fish), but I chalk that up to the fact it is 7x and have never attributed it to any inherent problems with RIO. I also went through a spool of seagar 7x fluoro last summer and really liked it as well. Fear that the fish can see my tippet is not why I use 7x. I go to 7x because I feel that the lightest and most supple tippet practical gives me the most natural drift and allows the fly to sink quickly. I will say that when using 7x, you need to be gentle on your hooksets. You asked about tippet in relation to fishing taneycomo. Most of my fishing is on the lower Illinois river in OK, but the method seems to work pretty well on any tailwater at low generation where fish feed on midges.
Trout Commander Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I have since switched to Orvis Mirage. I got turned on to it when Justin let me use some of his down at Sunburst. My thinking (and it has held true) was that if it was good enough for the wild NFoW bows I was catching it would work everywhere else too. I didn't necessarily think it was any better than the Rio FlouroFlex, but it wasn't any worse either and $5 cheaper. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted.
