I know several people who used to fish a lot before they moved to the lake, then they pretty well quit fishing. Others who live there fish almost every day.

A guy I got a kick out of was one who has a house and yard in one of the coves and I watched him from my boat one morning. He had an old water well tank with the top cut out and rigged so it fit on a three-point tractor hitch. He was backing his 4WD tractor into the lake to fill the tank, then he'd raise the lift and drive up to his vegetable garden, open the valve at the bottom of the tank, and water his veggies with lake water. Now, there's something you can't do unless you live on the lake! Pretty slick, I thought.

When we were looking I was really surprised of how many lakehomes do NOT have docks. Im know it isnt necessary- but it sure is nice jumping in & fishing within minutes. I dislike trailering to a ramp.. I am no realestate tycoon, but when the market comes back all our property will go back up.. I HOPE I bought low enough to absorb the beating I will take when I sell this home in Omaha....

How is it going as far as trying to maintain two places with that kind of distance between them? I'm looking for a vacation/wintering area/retirement home near the lake too but I'm concerned about trying to maintain it until I can retire (currently living in Minnesocold).

i live in Wichita and it's 5 hours for me to get to the lake home. The owner next store and i have it worked out. Whoever is there, cuts both lawns. So, far it has worked out. Only challenge is trash...So, we bring it home or use small bags to dispose of whenever we're there.

Thanks. Good idea. Hope everyone is ok down there. Tornadoes? Dec 31st? Sheesh!

The walleye population may be getting better then it used to, but they are still WAY outnumbered by everything else. I have not caught all that many walleyes in the lower lake, but my catches have improved a huge amount in the last few years. 2010 being the best ever in the lower lake. I can catch crappie just some of the time. I used your jig trolling method and just killed em for a couple of springs, then we had the flood of 2008. Couldn't catch a crappie. Then, we had somewhat high water in 2009, and I could not catch a crappie. This year I didn't get to go much at the right time due to work.

You're right. There are many species to be caught in this area, and I should have told billfo, "you'll catch about the same fish around Baxter as you will in Cow Creek"... There is a pretty good bunch of walleyes that reside around the Baxter area. Can't wait to retire. At least one more year.

Hopefully the market will be better in 3-4 years ;)

Billfo... it took us 18 months to sell our Omaha home. It seemed like forever before we could start building the lake house. But, it has all been worth it. We love it on the lake!

I use to fish alot in my Bassboat days.. Now I use the lake for my relaxation..Somedays I enjoy driving on the water than actually fishing... "sometimes".... ;)

I have a better work schedule than most.. I COULD spend 16 days on the lake after every 5 weeks of work. AND I can come down for a couple of days in between here & there (if I want the 6+ hr drive).. Actually it is pretty easy. heat/cooling management, watch the electricity & shut off the water main. We burn our trash- carry out the can & bottles (toss them out at the first gas station). Good neighbors watch the place & I have something worked out with one of them to keep the placed mowed. My cove is a pretty social place & everyone has been great. Everyone watches out for each other. Most everyone there is a transplant. Vacationed on the lake and eventually bout a vacation home- fixed it up & then eventually retired there. Works for us. The corp of engineers limit the number of boat slips, so if your house does not have one- you will take your chances leasing one + you are at the mercy of the owner $$$.. I bought a newer metal covered slip with a lift for 25K (in a private 10 slip unit, we share insurance & costs, with a contract). * Stone county has the lowest taxes.

Advice: GET A GAS POWERED GOLF CART !!!

In sure I would miss things in Nebraska like the high property taxes, the crime, an inconsistant football team & all the fat girls you could eat !! LOL

You gotta come down for a couple days & you would be hooked (figure of speach)

Billfo what are you thinking???? You need to keep your home here in Omaha that way you will stay true to your roots! At least we are not in the frozen tundra like we were last year!

And here I thought Omaha was "The Good Life"! That's what the sign says on I-680 just before you cross the river, right? My son just escaped, er moved, from Omaha to Denver and he's plenty happy about it.
