Do they have to be ancient to catch fish?

The so-called re-makes that are hanging on the shelves, are they as good as the old?

I'm having some hook tangling issues with stock trebles on this bait.

Whats the deal, do I need to swap them for short shank trebles, if so what brand?

Have any of ya'll swapped the snap clip out for an O-ring?

Or does this kill its action?

Its seems to get overpowered by bigger line or a M/H action rod.

Whats the proper action rod for this bait?

Also, this bait seems to run better the slower its retreived.

I can't retrieve it slow enough.

Your thoughts...

I find the "original" models effective, but I have none of the real originals with which to compare. I think the snap instead of the O ring is a plus and I do not change them out. I have bought Brad's Wigglers (an almost identical bait) and they have O rings. They tend not to run true.

I do not change all my wart hooks out, but when I do I use VMC Barbarians.

My 2 cents.

I like the #059 Phantom Brown Crayfish and the #086 Phantom Green Crayfish. After loosing my last old school phantom and seeing the ridiculous prices the old school warts were selling for on Ebay I just bought the new Original ones at wal mart.I must say that the fish dont seem to care,I catch just as many as I did on the old school ones.I use a 6'6" medium rod and 10lb fluorocarbon line.

I run 10b p-line with a 7' wright and mcgill fiberglass crankbait rod with crankbaits. I have never ran the "old school" wiggle warts, but the new ones from wal-mart work good for me. I caught quite a few largemouth's and smallies on the #059. That same $4.16 crankbait caught me 30+ fish over three trips, including two 18" smallies and a 5lb largemouth on the white.

There's one reason why Wiggle Warts catch a lot of fish: A lot of people throw them!

There's an entire world of cranks out there, the Wart is just one of them. I find it amusing that some of the same folks who kicked the first suspending jerkbaits (Rogues, Husky Jerks) to the curb in favor of 15$ Lucky Crafts can also run around checking EBay or Craigslist trying to get an "old-school" lure.

People can be fickle creatures...

I won't lie, I really like my lucky craft live pointer, I have caught lots of nice fish on it too. I have become a bit of a brand whore with some stuff lately....the wife doesnt like it.

I probably have 50-75 original warts and 25 newer wiggle warts. I find them both to have some that "run" better than others in both categories...much like a redfin, some work better than others.

All that to say, confidence is huge when it comes to fishing and you must be mentally prepared to consistantly catch fish. I was "married" to my early spooks for years until I lost some of them and had to buy newer ones, but ya know what...after some modification the new ones catch fish too.

I call that, trying to get an edge. Which is also trial and error.

I don't care about the brand as long as it catches fish.

I've wasted tons of money and time trying to get these "throwback" baits off ebay.

Usually, its futile, but when I get a good un, it catches bigger fish. Its a big gamble to me.

Also, the wiggle wart is a niche bait versus a jig which is a staple in the tackle box.

I usually throw a Bomber Flat A under conditions that would prompt most people to crank a wart.

Its just that, I'm really bull headed and want to cathem on the Wart.

I just got my ebay wiggle wart.

The old school bait has a thinner bill than the current originals.

I laid them side by side and it was obviously thinner,

the hook hangers were slightly bigger in diameter and spread out a bit more.

I've never fished a Wiggle Wart in my entire life of bass fishing. I have been and still am a big fan of Bandit crankbaits, and secondly Bill Norman's baby N. But I grew up fishing shallow swamps and bayous, and the Bandit is a great shallow water crank. I guess I ought to give em a try by now.
