jdmidwest Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I was looking into an E Reader. Most magazines are available now as a pdf and my news is always online and downloaded as RSS feeds. Does anyone have any experience or preferences with either the Kindle or Nook? May even end up with a Netbook or Tablet. flytyer57 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Call me old fashioned but I like to hold a book or magazine when I read. Unless of course it's a menu at the restaurant, a street sign, or the crap I read on the internet. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
rps Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I too love books. However, I bought a nook color for Christmas. The wife and I have been very pleased.
Danoinark Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I just posted this on a thread that Al started about old books: Just seems something "obscene" about not being able to turn pages, highlight a quote or write in the margins. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Njardar Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I bought a Kindle this summer and love it. I was a diehard traditional book lover until I could not find something to read at air port shops. With the Kindle I've got many titles to chose from and they are only a WiFi signal away. One plus for amazon is that they will send a sample book to try, and if I like it I can buy the book. The sample is usually long enough to know if i want the book. A downside of the Kindle is that I cannot share books with a friend, only with my wife because her Kindle is registered to the same account. I do find myself reading much more. - Charlie
flytyer57 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I hope I don't live long enough to see the end of the library, where everything is no longer available in print and you have to download what you want to read. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
jdmidwest Posted January 9, 2011 Author Posted January 9, 2011 I don't see this as the demise of a printed book, but periodicals days are numbered. Fly Tyer Mag is offering E version subscription along with printed material. News is the main thing I would be using it for. Currently, I download news feeds and read them at a restaurant while at lunch or between customers. MDC mag and some other publications come to me as pdf to save on paper and trees. Most of my technical stuff comes in pdf also. Laptops are bulky and low battery life. The new Kindle has a browser that looks like you can use for net access. I was just looking for opinions from others that have them. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I've had a Kindle for about a year now and I think it's the only way to go, the format at least. Pros are no stacks of dust catching books, you can adjust the size of the font, you have a built in dictionary, you have hundreds, maybe thousands of free or .99 cent books available. The only con I can think of is the initial price and the need to charge it every few days. Before I bought a Kindle I would carefully look at the others, but with Amazon's head start it might be hard to get ahead of them. I suspect that with emergence of Pads they might be the best option. If a person is like me and uses the computer for information and forums the pad should work well for reading and what they use a computer for. You can do Kindle on a Pad or a phone app. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Terry Beeson Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I got my wife a Nook for Christmas and she's really enjoying it. She can go to Barnes and Noble, pick up books, see if she likes the content, then download it right there... or anywhere for that matter with a WiFi. I didn't get her the 3G option. Still learning some of the Nook particulars, but so far she really likes it. I got an iPad for Christmas and there is a Kindle app available for it along with various other book/library apps including books via iTunes. There are a lot of free books out there including some classics (I'm working on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" right now - free) and lots of other books you can download. In addition, you can load pdf files and other files on it and view them. PLUS all the other stuff you can do with an iPad. They all have their pros and cons, even paper books vs. e-books. So, research is the key. The main reason I chose the Nook over the Kindle is because my wife and daughter like to spend time in B&N. Other than that, the Kindle and Nook are pretty neck and neck... Wayne SW/MO Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 How do you like the I-pad Terry? Does it replace the computer for a lot of applications? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
