stocking roaring river

Recommended Posts

Don't they stock 3.3 fish per every angler who bought a ticket the year before ? Right ? Am I missing something ?

Perhaps the low flow would come into play.. and what is the CFS instead of gallons per day. (?!?!)

Thanks - Brian

In 30+ years of fishing Roaring I have never seen the river really fish poorly. There have been times in the heat of the summer in the middle of the day you would have to really work to catch fish. Stocking has always been consistent and most of pissing and moaning I have heard over the years were more from frustrated fishermen than reality but I do remember a summer back in the mid to late 90s when the fish size got REALLY small by the time August rolled around. I was told by the hatchery guys that they were simply running out of fish to stock.

How many trout to raise is an educated guess for the hatcheries, so like us, they will underestimate.

Shouldn't we have to work to catch fish? I mean, the trout parks are already unnaturally full of fish, so when the water is low, the sun is high and hot and there is a lot of fishing pressure, I would expect the fishing to be more difficult.

I think we take our put-and-take fisheries for granted (including taney). A lot of people are catching fish by adapting to the conditions. Tim caught 15 in 90 minutes. That's a fish every 6 minutes. Seems like good fishing to me.

Yeah, It should be pointed out that when I was there you could stand at the confluence of Dry Hollow. where the C&R wading starts, and look one direction and see a lot of people, look the other and see no one.

RR is my favorite trout park however, becasue it is a long trip for me and the gas prices are so high I havent been there this year. I have been to both Taney and Bennett several times. If RR is anything like Taney or Bennett they are not stocking nearly as many fish and average fish size has not changed as promised. In fact the average size of the fish I have been catching is smaller than normal.

I agree fishing should not be really easy but, we (tax payers and fishermen) are investing more and more bucks into a program that over time has produced smaller and smaller returns and is now not only producing smaller returns it is also producing less returns at a continually increasing cost. I don't think that is right.

I would rather be fishin'.

Do you really think they are stocking less fish? My daughter watcheda family of 6 catch thier limits, at least twice apiece. So maybe more greedy fishermen? I will agree that the fish are smaller then they were at the beginning of the season.

If my memory serves me correctly. They changed the # of fish they stock per fisherman when they changed the limit to 4. I believe that they use to stock 2.5 fish for every fisherman but now I belive it is 2 fish for every fisherman.

If I remember correctly, They calculate the # of fishermen by using the number of tags sold the day before the day of the week and the # of tags sold on the the same day the year before.

Very seldom do they actually raise enough fish to stock all year and usually the fish don't grow fast enough to be stockable by the time they are needed. The hatchery actually trades fish with other hatcheries so they can get enough fish to stock.

one reason the fish are getting so smalll may be because the hatcheries didnt raise as many trout fry as normal since they are putting air pumps into the the hatcheries and trout runs to keep trout from dying of lack of oxygen

A hatchery employee told me that they lost 60 lunkers because some leaves plugged the water system and cut off a fresh supply of ogygenated water.
