Should work great Jason. Now go buy some cranks and I mean ALOT. Thats the best part of trolling for walleye. :)

LOL Rangerman! That is the next step for me. Been hammering the web trying to find the best price on Reef Runners and such. Will probably also get a snap weight kit since I am going to start out with superbraid. Of course, those B&B Bait Boxes look nice too. Gotta put those cranks somewhere.

I hadn't seen the Special Mates. They look pretty slick. I appreciate the "shopping list". Walleye fishing is quite the investment...lol!

I am guessing you are running leadcore with some of those crankbaits? Not sure snap weights would get some of those down deep enough.

The Precision Trolling book covers a lot, but it is just a starting point. Some things I will have to figure out include:

Do the standard dive curves cover different trolling speeds? In other words, how deep will a Reef Runner run at 2 vs. 3 mph?

If a 1 ounce snap weight adds 33% to the depth, does 2 ounces add another 33%?

I am not even sure where to start with leadcore. The examples they use are with spinners and shallow runners at slower trolling speeds.

Lots of trial and error ahead. Great excuse to get out on the water!

Packersooner, best price I've found on Special Mates (be sure to get the 8" deep crankbait model if you buy one) is from Jackson Lures: http://www.jacksonlures.com/

Best price going on Reef Runners (they seem to be on permanent close-out) is at Reelbait: http://www.reelbait.com/

Speed supposedly does not affect the dive curves for unweighted lures. Amount of line out does. (That's why line counter reels are so great to have.)

Yes, a 2-oz. snap weight will give you double the depth addition that a 1-oz. weight will, given the same speed and lure. I'm not familiar with the 33% formula, though.

Leadcore is considered a weighted system also, so speed is crucial. Most benchmarks for leadcore are based on 2.0 mph. Using the same lure, if you go faster, you'll need to let out more lead to reach the same depth; go slower, and you'll need less lead out. I generally catch more fish on leadcore than on flatlines. Don't know why, other than the fact that turns and speed changes create vertical swim (the lure will rise or fall in response to the boat movement), which may sometimes be a trigger. Also, flatlines tend to "shortcut" or flare out on turns, while leadcore follows the boat's path more precisely.

I gotta say the Offshore Mini boards are the stuff. Very light weight and you dont need to buy heavy trolling rods, they work great on any spinning or bait caster rig. The other thing they work good for is bank fishing in current, they really get it out there with little resistance and disconect to fight fish not the board. They work well with the offshore tadpoles as well.
