I threw a Popping bug for Bluegill on Little Dixie during Prime spawning time last year. i got blown off the lake by a huge storm just about the time i got settled in and started catching fish. I've always wondered what i missed. Should i got back this year?

Thanks for any advice,

Never fished it specifically for bluegill, but I did catch a really nice redear while throwing a beetle spin for crappie. Supposed to be a decent population of panfish in the lake. Lake sturgeon too.

I think MDC threw a little bit of evertying in there, best I recall a monster paddlefish was caught out of there and there are some muskie as well. Caught a number of bass, catfish and crappie in there when I was at Mizzou, fun lake.

There's some decent bluegill fishing in the lake, and the redear fishing in May can be spectacular- lots of fish in the 7-9" range. Small jigs & streamers worked in the shallow coves during the spring produce pretty well for them.

There's good numbers of black and white crappie, most around 7-8", but I've seen fish as large as 14" in there. There's a lot of largemouth, most 12" or less, but MDC has shocked a few in there over 8lbs, and one just a hair over 10lbs.

There's some weird stuff in there too, as mhall said- paddlefish, some very large blue catfish (20-30 lbs), a few lake sturgeon. They apparently tried stocking it with smallmouth as well in the 80's or early 90's, but had little success.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info, sounds like I’m going to have to try it again. As I recall the lake looked real nice and who knows maybe I’ll catch one of those bizarro fish.

The trip I made last year was on the day after I had my best ever smallmouth fishing on Big Piney. The river came up over night and my buddy and I needed a reason not to go home early. I’ll probably try to make it a combination smallmouth / bluegill trip. If a person times it just right those big redears will be all over a popping bug.
