MDC has a boat docked on LT at Branson. The MWP sometimes has a boat in the water but sometimes have to launch a boat- not sure in this case- but the mwp's boat is below Branson. If a patrolman gets a call and he's either at home or on the water on TR- he has to drive to the dock and motor 7 miles to the dam thru traffic and sometimes fog. MDC has to get to his boat and do the same. Branson FD does have a rescue boat but they also have to launch it.

If you're at the dam and need help, don't expect quick service. Hope for a fisherman to come by in his boat.

Again- where was this guy stuck? On the island? In the water? Was he in "danger". Assumption may not have been the right word- I'm looking for clarification which Brian was not clear in his initial post.

I don't know how I feelabout this. I have been told by more then 1 old timer, it is time to start heading to the bank. I get a little lost when the fish are really on.

I only know about this situation what Brian typed. I don't even know Brian. We've exchanged greetings a couple of times and that's about it.

But Brian's account of Brian's actions bothers me a lot more than any account of some guy getting stuck out there ever has.

To summarize what I got from it:

1. I KNEW the guy was in trouble.

2. I goofed around for awhile before doing anything.

3. I'm a super-stud waterdog hero lifesaver and everyone knows me.

4. I called the water patrol way too late, but it's their fault they didn't show up until it was over.

5. Someone else rescued the guy while I sat there watching the show, but I'm sorta taking credit for it anyway because I DID go tell the dam operator what was happening.

6. They should give this poor accident victim a ticket for being dumb because interfering with power generation is a crime.

Yeah? Well so is standing idly by and watching someone drown...which, by your own account...is almost what you did.

Just a suggestion: next time you "know" someone is in trouble (and I agree, sometimes you just get that feeling even though the facts aren't in yet) how about you call the water patrol on your cell phone (or ask someone nearby to do it if you don't have one) and THEN holler at the dam operator. FYI, that phone is there for emergencies. Don't be afraid to use it in a real emergency. And...don't brag about it. Just post, "another guy almost died yesterday below the dam because he didn't heed the horn. Luckily, some good samaritans came by and rescued him."

I'm sure you're a decent chap and all that jazz, but based on what you wrote, I would say you weren't your sharpest self that day or when you typed this.

Phil,

You're right. Once you type it...it's out there! There's no taking it back.

I talked to Brian yesterday. Here's what he said.

There was water running- had been running for quite a while. This guy was at the bottom of the island in no danger fishing. Theey blew one long horn that meant there was 2 more units coming on and alot of water. That's when Brian become aware that the guy may be in trouble if he didn't get off the island to the south, the direction he came in. He did not. That's when Brian, seeing the guy wasn't getting out, when for help.

Both Brian and I know that the island is a safe place even with alot of water running. The worse case- he'd spend the night out there. But chances are a boat would come by (which it did), see him and give him a lift to the bank (which they did). Yes the guy was scared- he didn't know how high the water would rise. But with the water running before the horn, he could have waded to the south bank at any time. He had time, though not much, to get out after the long horn. Brian said he yelled at him but he couldn't hear at first.

So- I see Brian did no wrong... except not tell the story very well.

As for the part about the ticket, again, we all make mistakes out of ignorance and stupidity... I side with alittle mercy on this one.

I agree with Phil. This has gotten out of hand. I would think, when fishing below the dam, that it is in everyones best interest to be helpful of others in the area during rising water conditions. In the first place we all make mistakes (some dumb mistakes some not so dumb but we are all guilty of making occasional mistakes) and in the second place if the State decides there is a serious safety concern for people fishing below the dam they could outlaw fishing in the immediate vicinity of the dam.

Like some of you I was kind of put off by Brians post but, I realize that in this kind of forum emotion cannot be seen in general conversation. I try (until specifically known) to take that into account when reading posts. This is a great forum and the last thing I want to see is it break down into a forum of flame wars.

I would rather be fishin'.

And fortunatly while the MDC was coming after the guy who ignored the horn, no one needed them in a real life or death situation, I assume.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

The guy made a M-I-S-T-A-K-E. It is over, let it go.

I would like to make a motion to lock this thread.

The fishing must have been great, I mean maybe the guy did have reason to stay, if only he and Brian were there fishing?

One more thing. Brian did talk to someone in the operation room at the dam. He said someone was on the island but not in the water. They stopped adding water and actually dropped the level somewhat. They didn't shut down though because he was not in danger.

Water Patrol did arrive in a boat but after the guy had been picked up and taken to the opposite bank where he left in his vehicle. The Water Patrol circled the island, then stopped to talk to a MDC agent who had come down the bank where the guy had left from... obviously the agent nor the patrolman ever saw the guy.

I will close this thread later tonight... I'll give some of you a chance to respond to what I've reported.

Phil I have Quenton's number in my cell phone, but can you give us the emergency numbers for Water Patrol and any others that might be appropriate in a similar situation? Dano
