lonkm Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Where can a fellow get some skip's this time of year? Local bait shop doesn't have any.
Martin Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 OK Lonnie, I'll bite...What are you referring to ?? Is skip jack a type of minnow ? As in bait ? I've heard of Skip Jack Herring, but I don't think I've ever heard the term used around here...But I lead a sheltered life and maybe everybody else knows to what you refer...
Outside Bend Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 It's a type of herring, and looks similar to gizzard shad if you elongated them a bit. Supposed to be excellent catfish bait. I've seen lots of them in the Mississippi River and a few in the Missouri, but haven't seen them anywhere else in the state. Sorry I can't be more of a help. <{{{><
denjac Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 In the gulf skipjacks are lady fish. Bait robbers hard to catch and messy when in the boat. They have no food value. podum Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 ive caught them below bagnell dam while fishing for whites. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
Members Fishinokie1 Posted February 19, 2011 Members Posted February 19, 2011 I used to catch them in Tennessee below spillways using two 1/16 oz jigs rigged about 18" apart. These make excellent bait for large stripes and big cats. Most people fish for them and catch one or two, then switch to their heavier gear and chunk these things out into the rushing water when the gates are open. I have seen some monster stripers caught on them. I never was lucky enough to hook into one of the monsters, but have caught several avg. size stripers. Skip Jacks look just like a miniature tarpin. They jump like one too when hooked up. I caught my first one by accident and had no idea what the heck I had just caught. I had to go home and Google it to find out. They are fun to catch if you can find them. I have not caught any in the waters around here, and don't know if you can find them in Ozark waters. If you teach your kids to fish, your wife will let you go more often.....
podum Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 okie, your description is dead on. Multiple jumps. Had no idea what these things were. Until an old timer cursed me for throwing one back. He wanted them for big cat bait. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
FishinCricket Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 ive caught them below bagnell dam while fishing for whites. Yeah, I got into those down there too... Jumpy lil buggers indeed... So it sounds like the answer is the Osage river below Bagnell dam? cricket.c21.com
Members cmcclu Posted February 20, 2011 Members Posted February 20, 2011 White River below Lock and Dam #1 at Batesville has skip jack, not sure if there present all year or not though. I can remember seeing other anglers fishing for them below the dam for bait.
