I'm not signing any petition because I don't think they do any good.

Also, I'm pretty much undecided when it comes to the subject of trout in the Ozarks. They don't belong here, they don't reproduce (generally) here, and my enthusiasm is directed toward native fish species. It's not that I don't like to trout-fish, but I've camped at 11,000 feet in the High Sierras and caught native golden trout, I've caught cutthroats and brookies out of western mountain streams, lake trout in Montana, and I've caught big vigorous rainbows, full of eggs, out of the Snake River. Here, I don't even buy a trout license - it's just not the same.

On the other hand, I HATE it when people attack something just because it's not their thing. If you don't like guns lets outlaw guns, if you don't smoke let's outlaw smoking, if you don't like car racing let's put a stop to it, etc., etc. That's not right, and I know there are a lot of people who are really into trout fishing here. More power to 'em!

With government budgets so out of control and so many painful cuts needing to be made, I'm thinking there must be some way to have trout fishing survive in the Ozarks on a private basis for those who are into it.

My feelings exactly. I spent half my life living on a trout lake(Lower Taney) and there was plenty of days I was glad those trout were there. When the bass fishing was tough, I knew I could always go after the trout to "get my fix". However, I would not of cared one way or another if all of a sudden they were gone.

I think this thread is getting off course. I think the original topic was about the impact of losing the hatcheries. Not who is to blame for the political decision to do so.

Honestly, There wouldn't be much of an impact. I think the state hatcheries would fill the void of federal fish just fine.

As far as privatization...after some thought I don't see it ever happening. It is quite an economical stretch.

Unless I somehow missed it, I don't think there was any political (left vs. right) blame for this on this thread. Just the blaming the COE and the FWS.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

Granted, however the discussion started with a misleading article which was full of misleading facts. Like the loss of a fed hatcherey would be the end of fishing as we know it as it ruins the local economy? If any blame is to be thrown out there it is the way they portray the situation in the article. The COE and the FWS have their problems but they are trying to find ways to get through it. Blaming them for needing to save some money someplace isn't fair. It is like blaming the principle of a school for not having enough teachers. They can only do what they are given to work with.
