MaxDrown Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 We're making our first trip to the Niangua River next weekend. We're fly fishing. We'll be doing a float trip with canoes from Redbeard's Ranch. Any advice on flies? Technique? Locations? Etc. Is there a good fly shop nearby? How about good dinner eats? -- Max Drown
FishinCricket Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Assuming the river is back down to a decent stage, you'd wanna use leeches or Woolie buggers, or a caddis larvae imitation, like a brassie.. Dark green works best.. Egg patterns would be another fly suggestion.. Whatever it is you fish with, bring along plenty of shot to get it close to the bottom.. Where? Call me at 417-718-8666 with your itenerary and I'll outline a few landmarks to watch for... Dinner in the area? I'd suggest Sand Springs Diner, Circle J or Ollies.. XP 590 Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Assuming you're floating from above Redbeards, near Bennett down to Redbeards? There is a lot of good water in that stretch, I've floated it about a half dozen times. My personal faves on the Niangua are big woolys swung deep, and soft hackles swung shallow. Barclay Conservation Access just below Redbeard's has some good water too. ** As far as dining, ditto above, but I'll add my preference. I've never had a bad meal at Ollie's. Good luck, the water looks a little high right now but that river can rise and fall fast. ** PS: Cricket, don't be giving away all the good spots! What ever you do, don't tell them about the nice hole right by Riverwood.
FishinCricket Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 What ever you do, don't tell them about the nice hole right by Riverwood If I actually have to tell them about a hole that friggin' pretty and fishy lookin' then there prolly ain't no help for 'em..... cricket.c21.com
