Members Eagle Rock Bo Posted March 16, 2011 Members Posted March 16, 2011 MY boys are off for spring break 3-21-11 week, we have never fished for spoonbill .What type of gear? rod size? line? Also size of hooks and how exactly do you guys rig up? What depth of water do you normally snag in? Thanks for any info.
Members bajacoop Posted March 16, 2011 Members Posted March 16, 2011 How you are going to go about fishing makes a huge difference in what gear you need. If you plan to troll then a shorter 6' or so rod seems to be prefrerred. If you plan to cast then a 10+ foot rod is prefered. You will want a reel with a large line capacity since you will get snagged and break off quite often nad if you can not hold much line your reel will be empty quick. I prefer braided line in the 65lb to 100lb range. I use 10/0 treble hooks and will tie on between 1-3 depending on how thick the fish are and how much stuff there is to get hung up on. If you look on youtube I think there is a guy named spoonbill king or something that has some decent videos about tieing hooks. As far as depths it is going to vary a lot depending on the body of water, water temp, etc. I would just try multiple spots until you find something that works and then try to repeat it.

denjac Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Hire Capt Don ! He will get you on them, plus you can get his new boat all bloody and yucky and not yours. You would be money ahead. Members bajacoop Posted March 16, 2011 Members Posted March 16, 2011 I think most trollers use 16-24 ounces of weight. In missouri the limit is 3 hooks per pole.
Members CBNMO Posted March 21, 2011 Members Posted March 21, 2011 First, snagging with multiple hooks on a line can be tricky or dangerous, especially for anyone not experienced. 10/0 or 12/0 is a big hook, should be real sharp, and these fish seem played out when you finally get them in, if your using a gaff, it would be safer, but when you grab a fish by the tail, they usually come to life and thrash around and make another run. You don't want a large treble hook in you or your kids when this happens. If you use multiple hooks, be careful. When I have new people out in the boat I prefer we use a single hook on each line. The boys get pretty excited grabbing a 80 pound fish to pull it into the boat. We usually use 6 to 10 ounce sinkers when trolling depending on depth and trolling speed. Casting from the bank 3 or 4 ounce sinkers are usually good. We use 10 to 12 foot surf (big spinning) rods from bank or boat. Line should be at least 40 pound. If using mono, don't buy the cheap 50 pound line, it's way to large and makes casting harder and wears out the line.
