I am looking for a small outboard for my jon boat. I need it to be a short shaft. My budget is only $300 - $400. I understand that it will be a used motor, but it needs to be working properly.

The boat it is going on is a 1953, so the motor doesn't have to be pretty (as long as it runs strong).

Thanks,

I purchased a short shaft Briggs and Stratton 5 hp. outboard and put it on a 18' voyager paddle John. I purchased it because I could buy it new for less than a used major brand outboard. New they sell for $699.00. I have been very happy with it. The main reason is that it always starts. I have owned low hp major brand outboards in the past that were very hard to start. You can purchase them new on ebay or locally at Sutherlands in Lebanon. I wouldn't be afraid of a used one either if you can find one.

Thanks,

Wow, I wish I would have read that before I bought my 1969 Johnson 6hp. Then again, it is going on a 1953 boat. The two look like they were meant to be together.

Thanks for the replies.

Curious about that briggs 5hp motor. Can it push that 18 footer up stream in a river just below the dam? I'm looking to put a 14' jon boat rig together and was told by several a 9hp is minimum for getting around in it. I'm sure the 5hp would have no problems on the lake side. What are you thoughts?

I plan on taking my 6hp out on Sunday. I will let you know how it pushes my 14 foot rig. Mine boat is old and heavy with a wooden deck added to the front. I will let you know how it pushes the boat. Like you said, everything that I have read has said that a 9.9 will put a 14 footer on a good plane. The reason I went with the 6 is that Springfield Lake is a 6hp limit.

Last year I met my brother in Cotter to fish the white just above Calico Rock. He has a 21' Supreme fiberglass john boat with a 15 hp Mercury. On the second day the fitting on his fuel hose broke. I had my 5 hp Briggs outboard with me. We were only going to fish a half day so we didn't have time to get a new hose. We put the Briggs on his Supreme. They were running several generators. We were surprised how well the 5hp Briggs moved his boat up stream. It should move a 14' fairly well. I believe the 5hp Briggs weighs about 56 pounds so it shouldn't take up all of your useful load. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I used to have a 16 foot flat bottom with a old suzuki 9.9 on it and on the james river when water was really flowing it was all it could do to go against the current. But we were loaded pretty heavy and the water was really up and ripping. Just my 2 cents.

I took my 6 hp out on Sunday. I have an old, heavy 1953 semi-v (14 footer) with a deck on the front. There were 2 adults and my 3 year old. It pushed the boat pretty well. Like some have said, I would not trust it if the water was flowing very fast on a river.

If I were you, then I would go for a 9.9 or a 15.
