I recently purchased some new flyline to line up my new reel. Trouble is, is that it's hard to see which end is the larger diameter on the wff line, should I try to located a taper on the 1st 30'section of the line (outer end) or is there a better way to determine this?

Thanks!

Sorry for the lame question.

I don't think there is a taper to it, one end is weighted on the inside. Most have a tag that says which end is which or has a loop for leader attachment. If the line doesn't have either you will have to use some precision scales to weigh like 4' of each end to see which weighs more and that would be your forward end.

That is completely not a lame question. I was wondering it myself since I plan on replacing my fly line in the next month or two. I sat there thinking how do you tell which end to tie to the backing, and which end do you attached a loop/leader connection to. Glad to know I'm not the only one out there that ponders such mundane things.

Now for the important part, please tell me which brand it is so I can avoid that issue...... :P

Only a double taper or level line can be put on a reel either way. All WFF lines have a taper. Sometimes you can actually feel the taper as you run it through your fingers. If not, a micrometer will help you determine where the taper is. It usually starts about ten feet or so back from the end of the line.

Usually, every spool of line is put on the spool with the backing end at the top of the spool and the leader end buried down underneath where you can't get at it.

What line did you buy? I'm surprised that there is no tag to show the backing end.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

I ran into this with the $9.99 BPS had for the Spring fishing classic. I finally looked at it long enough that I could tell which one was the forward end. As stated above, it was the end that was on the inside, if you are working with the same line.

I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted.

TC this might just be the same line I had my wife p/u for me along with some new waders. It's made by Cortland but is pkg'd in a White River baggie. If you look at the two loose ends they look to be about the same, but I just noticed further into the roll the diameter looks greater, so I'll unroll the stuff & mic it just to be sure before I spool it on.

Thanks guy's!

The taper doesn't start at the end, there is a section of level at the end. If you go back 20' feet or so from the end you should see the change.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
