Members B-Ray Posted April 9, 2011 Members Posted April 9, 2011 I fish a lot of these areas on a regular basis.I make it up almost once a week in the winter and a couple times a week in the summer. The tailwaters are fine for wintertime, keeps the crowds down, but summertime there are a lot better options. The lakes in Southpark have just opened up, which is a good option for some fatties(11 Mile Res., Antero, and Spinney Mt.Res.). Post up here again when you get close to coming out and I can point you in a good direction, or if the timing is right, meet up with you all somewhere and help with the learnig curve for a new area. BTW, try to keep it to weekdays for your fishing, lot less people. D.
Greg Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 We camped in Estes park a couple of summers ago and even though it was unseasonably rainy and cold (in Aug!) we had a great time. The fishing was pretty good too. I fished the Thompson in the park several different places as well as below town. It's pretty varied fishing for one river. In the upper reaches in the park it is very small and mostly dry fly fishing for brookies and the occasional brown. The river is much bigger below town. My favorite area was moraine park/meadow in the RMNP itself. The funny thing is I had been advised not to fish there because the fish were too heavily pressured. But I had a ball catching lots of browns (mostly 8 to 14 inches) in that area one evening. Members B-Ray Posted April 11, 2011 Members Posted April 11, 2011 Barredrock- I just noticed your post over on Rocky Mtn Fly, don't let those guys get to ya. They're not big on giving out information, they consider it hotspotting. Like I said before, post up here when you have some dates nailed down and I'll hook you guys up with some solid info. I'm originally from Mo. and would like to eventually make it back there and check out the trout fishing by Ozark area.
Jason R. Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Im gonna second the Gunnison out of Pleasure Park- stop in there and talk to Leroy in the big shop at the park- hes a little crazy but he knows whats up. Plus he knows all the guides and such. The Pan and the Taylor are fun too. If you can hit it right, the salmon fly hatch on the Gunnison is epic. http://flyinthesouth.com/
flyfishmaster Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 BarredRock, As you can tell by everyone so far there are a lot of "great" places to fish in CO. And as B-Ray mentioned, some of those guys on Rocky Mnt Fly Forum (not all of them) will not give out locations and specfic info. I will PM you in a a bit. AZ_Trout nailed it when he mentioned Pat Dorsey. I have known Pat for 14 years now and is has to be one of the top 5 guide in all the Western states. You cannot go wrong using his service. Where ever you go, you will have a blast. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!

I was blown away by the attitudes there. I don't care if they think that is "hotspotting" or not there just isn't any excuse for that.
