Hey all, I was just wondering if anyone has participated in either the boater or co-angler side of BFL tournaments. I've never fished in one, but I'm considering fishing Truman in June and Lake of the Ozarks in September. Any input would be appreciated, I just was curious if these tournaments provide a good experience (especially on the coangler side).

Thanks

I fished them years ago when they were called the Red Man series. I fished both boater and nonboater sides depending on what lake we were on. Since I had little experience on Lake Oz I went non boater but I usually went boater on the Rock and Bull but if my partner was on something better than me I would go with him. If its anything now like it was then you will learn alot of new things no matter how seasoned of an angler you are. I have always believed that you can pick up new things even from the most novice angler if you keep and open mind and pay close attention.

I have not fished them myself, but have friends that fish both sides.IMO if you want to watch how other people fish, or you are good enough to adjust to any style of fishing under any conditions they are great. But don't expect the boater to slow down or postion the boat for your fishing style at all or to "teach" you how to fish out of the back of the boat while he hugs a bank with the trolling motor on high and all the water you have is what the boat has run over.

The best reports I get fron coanglers are the ones where the guy laid down his rod, watched the angler get his limit and was happy for the experince. The worst ones I hear about is when the boater has boat problems and can't run anywhere and still asks the coangler for $40 gas money. But don't expect to be put on fish and to share the fish with the boater, that is not going to happen, he needs those fish and 80% of the time will be thinking about blocking the back of the boat from fishing that area.It is not a team event, every big fish landed my the back of the boat is a fish the front can't wiegh so as long as you understand all of that and are willing to invest your money into a day of education that may result in someone blocking your fishing I think you will have a great time.

I am just not a good backseater and don't want to put up the money for a boater entry when I know I am not good enough to win I steer clear. But if I had paid my dues to sit in more back seats and learn from people who doing right and wrong things then I would probally not feel this way.
