jdmidwest Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Only in America. This wonderful thing called GPS is about to be over run by the worthless invention called the "Cell Phone". GPS has become a part of my daily life that really has a useful purpose. It puts me on my mushroom spots that my memory seems to forget. It guides me to the fishing spots and turkeys that I put to roost in the dark of the early morning. It helps me find addresses when customers don't have a good sense of direction to tell me. Now it looks like a new company called Lightspeed is going to block weaker gps signals with their stronger broadband signal. Read the article and go to the link to voice your opinions to try to prevent it. Can't rely on the old FCC to make the right choice. Lightspeed to interfere with Gps Signals in MO. flytyer57 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 GPS has become a part of my daily life that really has a useful purpose. It puts me on my mushroom spots that my memory seems to forget. First of all, if you quit eating those psylocibin mushrooms, your memory would probably work enough to find stuff. Second, I cannot see this happening to a point that we really have to worry. The US military uses GPS systems (in fact it was designed just for them) and I can't see them losing that all important system to a broadband company. Also there are the GPS companies out there that would really lose a lot of money if this does cause problems. That would put an end to it pretty quick. Then again, maybe it is the thing of the future and we will all one day be using broadband to find our way in the fog. Even the US military. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Al Agnew Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Jo said in the article that in a worst case scenario, this could result in dead spots in a one mile diameter circle around the towers. 40,000 potential one mile in diameter dead spots. Over the whole country. I would venture to say that even if this isn't worked out, and such dead spots occur, it won't be a huge problem. And since the company and the GPS people are working on it, at this point it isn't worth getting all worked up over. Bears watching, but not time yet to mobilize the troops.
flytyer57 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Bears watching, but not time yet to mobilize the troops. But if the troops don't have their GPS, how will they know how to get there? There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
jdmidwest Posted April 8, 2011 Author Posted April 8, 2011 This has actually been going on for months, the Traveller just posted it and I thought I would pass it along. Nobody really knows what it will do when they go live. The GPS is a very weak signal versus the ground based tower signals.
