Members stikrz Posted July 23, 2006 Members Posted July 23, 2006 Hi All, This is my first post and I'm looking to upgrade my net. I've been using a nylon type which has worked to get me into Fly Fishing, but I'm tired of tangles and caught hooks resulting in damage to both! I've been reading about the rubber style and different manufactures, Frabill, Fisknat, Brodin to name a few and thought I'd try some recommendations from the "pro's". I hope to find one in the mid-range price. Not really ready for the 60.00-100.00 nets. If anyone has a suggestion I would appreciate it. I guess you need to know I usually catch and release, but occassional string a few. Thanks All, CGallagher Take a man fishin' he eats for a day...Teach a man to fly fish and he may need a second job!
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 23, 2006 Root Admin Posted July 23, 2006 Do they make a lite weight rubberized trout net? I'd love one too but I don't like the weight of a normal rubber net- way too heavy. I've always thought that the best way to avoid the hook-in-net deboggle is to debarb my hooks. We put nets in all our rental boats. I recently changed from nylon netting to soft, catch-n-release netting so as to not strip a rainbow of it's scales before releasing. As soon as we run out of these nylon nets in the shop, I'm selling only the soft netting nets.
Members Bill McC Posted July 23, 2006 Members Posted July 23, 2006 i use a measure net, soft net, I do not have to touch the fish to measure, and a good net. If Phil says it is okay I'll find the kink and post it. BillMc
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 I use the same net as Bill McC! It's a great catch and release net. I also debarb my hooks for ease of taking out of the fish and also if it gets caught in the net. Well worth the investment, which isn't that much. Not to mention you can measure your fish while it's in the net. John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 24, 2006 Root Admin Posted July 24, 2006 Please post the link... thanks for asking.
jOrOb Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 I was thinking I saw a trout net with a rubberized net. It was pretty light too. This is the only one I could find: http://cgi.ebay.com/EGO-Small-Rubber-Landi...bayphotohosting But I was thinking I saw a more traditional landing net with a lightweight rubber basket. I will keep searching. jOrOb "The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me." Rev MacLean
timsfly Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 I have a fabrill that only costs 12.95 it is big enough to hold a 8lb fish and has a rubber coated net and a graphite frame, not the best looking of nets but is light, and lures don't hang in it to bad. I sell them in the shop Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
Members stikrz Posted July 24, 2006 Author Members Posted July 24, 2006 Thanks for all the replies guys! I did't realize that the rubber net would be "too" heavy. I guess I need to actually feel one to see if it's too cumbersome to pack around. I do de-barb my hooks unless I forget from time to time and still on the nylon net I get caught a little. Maybe I need to shave them better and to be a better debarber!!! My frustation could be do to the fact that I'm fairly new to Fly Fishin'. Pole under one arm, lanyard from my net pulling tight, fish in the net flopping around getting wrapped around line..... or maybe I need more patience! I'll check the link (Thanks JOrbOb) and the Frabill site again. I might come and see ya Tim next time I'm down by Taney. I'll check out the measure net too. Haven't seen that one yet I don't think (Thanks BillMcC and KS Fly Fisher) If I find one I like I'll post about it or PM ya Phil. Thanks again for the help Chuck Take a man fishin' he eats for a day...Teach a man to fly fish and he may need a second job!
Members stikrz Posted July 24, 2006 Author Members Posted July 24, 2006 Wow! That measure net is cool! They even have a collapsable one that would be great for putting my stuff in my bag when I ride my bike to go fishing! Phil, they also offer one with a titanium loop and a rubber net. Thanks for the lead BillMcC. What's the material on the lower end ones. I'm guessing nylon which would be fine. Everything is a trade off and I'd trade the rubber for the ease of measuring and releasing. Is it built well and holds up to the occassional brush snag? Also, I see it has a little loop on the handle, so how do you attach it to your pack? I really like that idea of the net design though! Tim What is the style name of the one you offer so I can look at it. I didn't really see it on the Frabill site. Phil Is it ok to post links without permission each time? Thanks again guys, Chuck Take a man fishin' he eats for a day...Teach a man to fly fish and he may need a second job!
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Chuck if you get a shallow catch & release net its faster, and easier to release a fish. At least it is for me. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
