Kayser Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Just saw an article on the periodical cicadas. If you remember the one from '98, it's the same ones, and in the same numbers. http://mdc.mo.gov/landwater-care/forest-management/forest-health/periodical-cicadas I wasn't trout fishing back then at 8yrs old, but I had an absolute blast fishing for bass and bluegill with live cicadas on the fly rod- the fish were just absolutely turned on. Climbing trees to catch them was almost as much fun as fishing with them. Never had to wait long for a fish to find it, either. Fishing was almost stupid good that year, and I can't wait for this hatch to get started. So to the entire purpose of the topic, I need some good cicada patterns for the fly rod. Both trout and warmwater patterns, please. This could be a very interesting summer of fishing for me. Oh, and also taking suggestions for an 8.5ft 8wt rod to build- I might need it for the smallmouth. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Zack Hoyt Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Jimmy T from Fly Fish Arkansas.com has had a few great write ups on the hatch for this year. Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions
flytyer57 Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Plenty of cicada patterns found on Google. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Trout Commander Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Check out Carolina Fly's Facebook page. He had an awesome pattern he called SICKada. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack

MaxDrown Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Do you have a direct link to the SICKada? I can't find it. -- Max Drown
Trout Commander Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 "SICKada" "Stuck In The Film" Turns out it's just pics, no recipe, but you should be able to get pretty close. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
Trout Commander Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Was just looking again and saw your comment on his page actually. If you click on the first picture he lists the materials - but still no recipe. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted.
