stlfisher Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 Think the water will be to high? I can't take it anymore and need to fish. Looks like the gauge is at 2.9 FT in the park at 491 CFS and 4.47 at Akers. I don't mind the high water, but don't like muddy water.
jah Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 The guys at Hargroves told me that when the Montauk guage is at 200 cfs, the water is "moving"---i.e. fast. But, I have fished it when it was "moving" before, but rarely had success. That's just because I suck at streamer fishing. So, long story short, it will be fast, way off color presumably, but not necessarily "unfishable". There you go....clear as mud, eh? Have a blast and report with pics of the water....I'm dying to see it. Jim
Gavin Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 Water will be stained but I'd head down if you need the fix.....Its usually clearer up above Ashley when the water is up. Be careful crossing because some of the gravel might be soft. Cheers.
stlfisher Posted April 29, 2011 Author Posted April 29, 2011 Thanks for the input guys. Gonna be a before bedtime decision with lot's of gauge watching this evening. Wish I could see the water from work.
Chris Barclay Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 I'd say that as long as you have a green light, GO! You can always have a seat and watch the debris go by. Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com
stlfisher Posted May 2, 2011 Author Posted May 2, 2011 Decided not to head down after all. Ended up chasing some Bluegill and Bass with a buddy of mine. Thinking maybe in a few weeks.
Chris Barclay Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 That was probably a wise choice. How'd the gills and bass treat you? Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com
stlfisher Posted May 2, 2011 Author Posted May 2, 2011 That was probably a wise choice. How'd the gills and bass treat you? They treated us is pretty well. We caught some very very nice gills and a dozen or so smaller bass. The action was steady all day, but not quite light's out. The gills seemed to be a little picky, but eventually they would take. For the bass we had to strip very slowly and then they would take. Gills were caught underneath an indicator...no topwater Saturday. Overall, it was a good day but kind of an odd one too.
Chris Barclay Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 I've found the same thing as well. The gills want to set up to spawn but the weather is really screwing with them. Should be an interesting season for sure. Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com
Gavin Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Headed down later this week for kids day...Hope tonights rain doesnt bollocks things up, but no rain in the forecast after today.... Glad you got out for some bluegill fishing.
