Braid For Grubs And Shakey Heads

Played with some braided lines while down this trip. Used 8# and 10# from Power Pro and Sufix as main lines with either 6# or 8# Seaguar leaders, for grubs and shakey respectively. Not sure what to think of it.

The leaders are a pain, especially if you need to retie one to the main line while blowing around in the wind. It absolutely will throw a grub a long way. Hookups were instant and solid, but for some reason I thought the overall feel and sensitivity was lower than with quality fluorocarbon. That might be due to some flotation from the line, but the braid diameter in those tests is so small it should not make a difference. Just kind of seemed "dead" or mushy even when I knew I was dragging and shaking in gravel and chunk rock. Tried a direct tie without the leader and had about the same feel. Maybe it just isn't meant for deeper apps.

Ran it on my usual St Croix grub rod, and a GLX 7'+ rod I use for shakeys and some weightless worms, split shot, etc. Threw well, does not twist, sounds awful. Like sawing one of your teeth out of your mouth awful.

Did you try the Suffix 832 braid? I have it spooled on a spinning reel and I think it isn't as loud as the other braid lines I've been using.

try the suffix 832 line. i've been using it for grubs/shakeyhead and on my crankbait rods. it sinks and it seems to have better feel than the normal braids.

When you say 7+ ft. GLX, is it the BSR 852? If so, the recoil guides amplify the braid noise because of the lack of an insert...

I've had great luck with Spire Wire's new Fluoro-Braid. It sinks faster than Suffix and has the same feel as 100% Florocarbon. I have switched to a medium power rod instead of medium heavy when fishing plastics and jigs due to the braid having zero stretch. I use it with a 15 to 20 pound florocarbon leader in ultra clear water and no leader in off color and stained water. I would also recommend using a small swivel to attach a leader. I prefer P-Line's line of swivels. They are smaller than traditional swivels but extremely strong.

I'm considering using the braid (Invisi-Braid) to fluoro set-up and have several packs of the Spro Power Swivels (#10 & #8). Seems like it might be a better option than trying to tie line-to-line, at least for me since I'm not as experienced as others with the type of knot needed to tie line-to-line. Any cons with using these swivels for this set-up?

Yes, and yes. Picked up the rod on a Ranger promo, would not have it otherwise. Upside is the braid won't cut the Recoils (or shouldn't). Tried the 832 and another Sufix, also Power Pro. Just thought they felt dead. Used to throw big braid as a main line on c-rigs and still use it for frogs in summertime ponds. Had a lot more sensitivity than the little braid seems to. Doesn't really make sense, but there it is.

Had the swivel thought cross my mind also. If nothing else you could pre-rig some like c-rigs and drop shots. I practiced the Albright, Uni to uni, and Seaguar knots using some big braid and 15# big game. It was a challenge even with those lines, good lighting, warm hands, and being inside out of the wind.

Basically, after the better part of 14 days with braid I'm still not sure what to do with it. Only answer is to go fishing again. Darn it anyway.

I use a Blood Knot for line-to-line connections. It's easy to tie and I have not ever had one fail. I prefer a swivel connection when fishing with spinning tackle, wether using braid or not. I have never used the Spro brand but I'm sure they would work. A swivel will totally eliminate line twist on spinning tackle. Concerning cons of swivels, I can not think of any.
