steveearle Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 I use a Blood Knot for line-to-line connections. It's easy to tie and I have not ever had one fail. I prefer a swivel connection when fishing with spinning tackle, wether using braid or not. I have never used the Spro brand but I'm sure they would work. A swivel will totally eliminate line twist on spinning tackle. Concerning cons of swivels, I can not think of any. Here's link to a great fishing knot resource I use. Good luck. http://www.animatedknots.com/indexfishing.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com The Alberto knot/modified Albright is really unbeatable for line to line. I can't argue with your zero failures...just another option. Awesome because it is whip-finished and not truly a knot, which gives you incredible break strength if done right.
Guest Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 What size braid to flouro combo do ya'll like? 20lb braid and 15lb flouro with swivel? this setup covers? flick shake, drop shot, shakey head, grubs, flukes, what about stouter hooks on the jigheads? I need to make a change because it hurts to break off trophy bass,

dtrs5kprs Posted May 6, 2011 Author Posted May 6, 2011 Used 8# and 10# braid, 8# and 6# seaguar leaders. Actually broke off more heads with the braid than with fluoro (harder to "bow string" the heads out of places). Did not break off any fish, but then I don't usually with seaguar anyway.
Guest Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 If your not up-sizing you flouro, why all the trouble to use braid/flouro combo? Why not all flouro?? Is it too stiff for spinning reels? I'm trying to wrap my brain around this concept...
Stoneroller Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 fluoro twists like crazy on a spinning reel. i used to deny this, but the reality is that it does. I used to only throw fluoro, then I tried braid one day and was sold. still get wind knots from time to time, but no more of those nasty blowups on the reel from the line being twisted like crazy. I still use fluoro on my setups that I use for clear water though. Fish On Kayak Adventures, LLC. I'm trying to wrap my brain around this concept... Different people will have different reasons for going braid to fluoro. I like the castability of the braid over mono or flouro, braid has longer life so I have to spool less line, less stretch/more sensitive. I can also change out the fluoro leaders pretty fast so I can start with a heavier leader and adjust to conditions if I need to. There are a number of knots to use. I like the uni to uni with a couple of half hitches on the tag end of the braid. I have yet to have this connection fail.

Another reason is I like to, and I can, and you can't stop me.
Stump bumper Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 I had a lot of trouble a few years ago when I tried fire line to flourocarbon, kept trying uni to uni and swivels but had to locate the swivels and tie two knots and the uni to uni took too long so I gave up and went back to flouro only, then I tried power pro and leaned the surgean's knot and it was just too easy and fast(can tie with one hand now) and now I wouldn't think about using anything else. When I get hung up,I'm glad I have a weak point in my line when using 20lb power pro and 17lb flouracarbon, it is still stronger than my drag but breaks just before the rod gives. The most important part of using braid is to find what is simple for you or it isn't going to work, but once you have that combo you'll never go back.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around this concept... For me it was spool life, alledged sensitivity, and mostly because I had to change anyway because Carbon Pro is gone . Straight fluoro always worked for me, but I learned not to run it on small spool reels. Have spooled a few thousand dollars worth of fluoro since changing to it in 2001-2. Braid definitely has the potential to soften that.
