Members Fredrick Posted May 9, 2011 Members Posted May 9, 2011 Been fishing at the dam area doing well some days ok others. I just wanna make sure I am not missing some slap the head type detail. I been fishing jigs white(and other colors) 1/32 or 1/16 ounce slow reel with a random jerk every now and then (also float fishing were I set it 3 or 4 feet and let it drift).I have also been using Rebal chrome minnows 2.5 inch and rooster tails. 2 Lb clear mono . Is their a certain color of jigs or other lures that have been good lately. This message board has been a great help to me I always try to plug lilleys landing and Ozark Anglers at both the branson landing and branson mall stores were I work at Fredrick jagermeister anyone?
Leonard Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 I think your doing thing right... You have to remember that the water is high and there is a lot of it... The fish are really scattered. When they flush (or feed the fish)in the hatchery, the fish will move into the outlet and feed and after a little bit will move back out.. other then that colors will just depend on what they want... and what time of day will come into play also.. Try this.. Head over to Phils and get some scuds,egg/glo-balls, and SJ worms and a few floats... with lite line... you can throw this on a spinning rod... you dont need a fly rod to throw flies Leonard http://www.taneycomonights.com
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 9, 2011 Root Admin Posted May 9, 2011 Not sure by your post if you're fishing from the bank or boat but either way, I'd change a couple of things. Bigger crank baits. Heavier line. You can use 6-8 lb line with crank baits. Most of the time, not all the time, you have to be on the bottom to do well, esp in running water. I don't think your jigs are heavy enough by them selves. May be if you use a split shot but I don't like to use them- they take away some of the action. Use 1/8 oz or even a 1/4 oz. 4 lb line is fine. 2 lb is over kill with so much water. If you hook a fish from the bank with 2 lb in this current, you'll have a tough time landing it. If you're using the flies Leonard mentioned, remember to get them down.
Members Louisiana Flyman Posted May 9, 2011 Members Posted May 9, 2011 just wondering which types of crank baits are the best. slim or wide body type.
Members Fredrick Posted May 9, 2011 Author Members Posted May 9, 2011 I always fish from the bank I forgot to include that in my post. But a guy down at the dam gave me a few puff balls on a little jig hook and they were fantastic when the fish were stacked up. What size/shape and or color of crank baits? Any one know what the puff things and the worms go for at phil's? jagermeister anyone?
bigredbirdfan Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 If I didnt have a float trip planned this weekend on the buffalo I would throw Smithwick Suspending Jerkbaits at the bank. Jerk Jerk pause. Pause being very important. When I say at the bank I mean within three feet. If you get the kind of fish I think are in those tree lines you had better have 6-8 lb test line and hold on. I would also throw no. 9 countdown rapalas as well. Unless you have clear water and little current these bigger baits will catch bigger fish than the jigs hands down. Now the jigs may catch more fish I'm not going to go there. If you jig fish you should have nothing less than 1/8 and if you could get your hands on 1/4 it would be better. If the jig isn't hitting the bottom you probably won't get bit. 4 or six pound is fine. If you use 4 you have to realize you can't muscle around big fish or you will be going throug $1 jigs in a hurry and get very mad in the process. The fishing should be outstanding. Good luck.
