I posted this in the Bennett Spring section, not realizing that there was a Niangua River section(Sorry).

So How's the river near Bennett?

I’m thinking about renting a ‘yak this Sunday and floating the river. I’m looking at the USGS data for Windyville and although I don’t have anything to compare the numbers to, it appears to be a bit low for this time of year. How would it be for a 7-8 mile float? More importantly, how is it fishing?

And, if it is low, would it be safe enough to take a float tube on?

I floated about 15 miles up river from Bennet on Saturday, the water was normal, and the river was full. Caught about 10 smallmouth in that section. There was only one spot up that high that was impassable. Not sure this helps but what the heck.

I left BSSP today BEFORE the big storm, and the river looks like the Mississippi - wide, high, brown and fast. Not good for floating or fishing - several folks who had been fishing the river had to come fish in the park because the river was coming up way too fast. And I repeat - this was BEFORE the big rain on Friday afternoon!

I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."

The wife and I went to Bennett Spring last Thursday for a get away from it all day and it looked like coffee n cream then

Didn't get to do any fishing though.

After hearing that it looked flat out ugly;I stayed away from the river so I don’t have a report. I fished the spring branch for a few hours Saturday and a couple more on Sunday. Fishing was far from great but not as bad as I expected. I got all my fish on olive and black zebra midges and #10 stonefly nymphs. Nothing to pat myself on the back about though.
