Members wackaloo13 Posted May 26, 2011 Members Posted May 26, 2011 Do y'all think that the current outside of the park will be fishable this weekend? I'm guessing it might be fairly crowded with a lot of floaters. What flow rate would you consider to be wadable?
Members MikeH Posted May 26, 2011 Members Posted May 26, 2011 I think it's going to be pretty high still. It's at 330cfs now. I won't fish unless it's under 200, although you may be more adventurous. -Mike
stlfisher Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 I would tend to agree. I fished at 200CFS a few weeks agon and it was defianatly fishable but pretty high and that water is moving. It is at 270 CFS now so I think the park would be high, but fishable. Outside the park would be challenging.
Idylwilde Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 We had a storm come through yesterday afternoon and dropped 1" of rain right on top of Montauk. but the upper watersheds did not get that much. The park is up about 3" and off color in the main river but the water from the feeder creek Pigeon Creek is flushing the color out real fast. Things should be good for the holiday weekend. Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
ozark trout fisher Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 I have fished the upper Current below the park in some pretty high flows (I will fish it up to 400 CFS), and it is definitely a different experience, considerably more adventurous and unproductive than usual when the water is up like that, but it is sure fun in it's own way. I say go. Don't get me wrong, there have been times in those kind of situations where I haven't caught anything, but it has still been worth the trip. My way of looking at this kind of thing is, if there is any chance whatsoever that you might catch a fish, you should definitely go and give it your best shot, otherwise you'll be regretting it the whole weekend as you sit at home. Worst case scenario you'll end up getting skunked in some of the most beautiful country you could ever hope to be in. Bright orange and yellow egg patterns are pretty good bets when the water is up and off color. But then they are also good bets pretty much any other time too.
Nortrad Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Wonder if the the stretch below Baptist is cleaned up? Those students I ran into last weekend had some trouble heading into the horse shoe. It didn't look good downstream from there. The river's going to be at a higher flow than a normal for a Memorial Day weekend. I predict some dumped canoes and, hopefully, no major incidents. There's some bad structure for negotiating after you've been dumped.
Gavin Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Youll be fine if it stays below 2.5 on the Montauk Guage...pick your crossings carefully though....Have a great trip.
