timsfly Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Hi, I live in S.W. Missouri, some of you know me, if you watch any news at all you will have seen how badly Joplin Missouri was tore up by last weeks tornado, I have a rod company that is considering donating a rod for me to auction off or raffle off to make some money for the joplin tornado relief fund, now here is my questions, what will make the most money, auction or raffle, and whom should I give the money to, the red cross ? the Convoy of Hope, they say each $ given is worth 7 and they have been a big help so far, or is there another group I should look into, any advice will be read and appreciated, thank you. I can get about 7 fly shops involved in the raffle, maybe more, I thought maybe selling tickets for 5$ each for a month period ? And then having some kid draw out a name or ticket ? Ok I have the rod now, it is a 7'9" 2pc Quad 4/5 wt Sweetgrass bamboo fly rod, this was given to me to raffle off for the recovery efforts continuing in Joplin Missouri, 5$ per chance, 20$ gets you 5 chances, all precedes will go to Convoy of Hope, I hope this rod will raise some money for the people in Joplin. You can send checks: Tim's Fly Shop 23387 st. Why 112 Cassville, MO 65625 Or you can paypal me at timsfly@hotmail.com use the gift button when sending money on paypal, this will bypass the fees paypal charges Or you can call the shop 417-847-4956, I'll pay the credit card fees, the entire 5$ you spend on a chance will go towards the entire donations, I will Take care of all fees on my end, it will not effect the total sent to convoy of hope, holler at me if there are any questions, or if I have left out any information I will take care of any shipping charges involved in getting the rod to the winner. I will donate money my self, but I'm not eliglble to win the rod I'll put pics up of the rod in a couple of days, I am going to sell chances on the rod for about 6 weeks, I'll have some kid draw out the winner, I will take pics so Everyone can see the process, the local paper will be on hand for the drawing. Thanks everybody, give what you can. If you want to thank the sweetgrass guys email them at www.booboys@3rivers.net Tell Jerry, Glen, and David thanks. Buzz Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 That's a great idea Tim. I would be interested in the raffle more so than the auction, but they are both excellent ways to raise money for a good cause. Let us know what you decide. Count me in. Buzz If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
timsfly Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 Thanks, I'm just waiting on the rod company to tell me what they are going to donate. Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
Zack Hoyt Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I would be up for a raffle as well. Great plan. Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions
Danoinark Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Raffle will get you more bucks, and both of those groups are dedicated and worth giving too. Divide the proceeds between the two. Both benefit. Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Jack Jones Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Love the idea. I hope you can get other shops involved so that money and raffle tickets can be purchased in many areas. I'm not always in or close to Cassville. Maybe set up a link here on OAF or your website to allow for Paypal donations/purchases. Members Dean colorado Posted June 3, 2011 Members Posted June 3, 2011 as others have said getting other shops buisnesses involved does 2 things. You have more places selling the tickets and each place selling tickets can add a prize so you have more people winning. I'm leaving Colorado today for vacation will be in the Branson area for about a week.
Trout Commander Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I also vote for and would participate in a raffle. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
Brian Sloss Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I am good for a few tickets, let me know when you start taking entries. I Think you could raise more with a raffle since a lot of people can afford $5 and only a few could bid over $1000. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
ness Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Raffle would work better in this case. You can cover a lot of ground selling tickets at various places around Joplin. Sometimes folks will balk if they think too many tickets are out there, but I'd bet you wouldn't run into that too much in this case, especially if the price is pretty reasonable. Auctions are a one time deal and work best when there's that perfect mix of big egos and alcohol driving the price up at an event. I'd buy a ticket if the price is less than my choke point. John
