Nighthawk Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Just flat got my butt handed to me yesterday trying to wade and czech nymph the river at sunburst and blair. water needs to drop another 200-300 cfs to do what i want to do. my fishing buddy struck out too with conventional methods. only benefit was all the eye candy coming down in bikinis. there was also a ton of floating moss coming downstream, i think disturbed by swimmers. my son, Rusty, who guides for ROLF, got his clients on fish from his drift boat, and that's how i would recommend you fish the river till it comes down. any other opinions?
Justin Spencer Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Every drift boater and some other fly fishermen caught at least one striper this weekend on streamers here on the North Fork. Keep these things, most were released to eat more of our trout. The one I helped clean was 30" and full of crawdads. Hoping to get out in the evenings this week and slim the population. Some big browns were caught as well on streamers with the nymph bite being pretty slow. Biggest trout I saw a picture of was once again caught between our campstore and boat dock. Looked like easily a 24"+ fish, I'll try and get it up on the bragging board of the dead drift fly shop website along with a few pics of stripers. Justin Spencer Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I think the best section for the stripers is Sunburst to Dawt but I think Brian caught his above Kelly so any deeper hole should hold them, for Sunday either stretch would be good as long as the river doesn't come back up to make it too high to get under McKee in the drifter. One was caught in the hole right below our house, and the others between Patrick and James, one 30" right in the hole as you come to the first set of houses past the water gauge. I think the bluff before the rope swing on river left as you get close to Dawt might be the best of all, but most fishermen were taking out at James. Another shout out to anyone with explosives training (or without training but access to explosives) free guide trips for life to anyone who blows up Patrick Bridge and re-builds one at least 6' taller. To be dead honest you could float from Hammond to Dawt and have a shot at a striper at just about any point once you get within a mile of Rainbow Spring....this is craziness. Need to run a special on guide trips for anyone wanting to totally chase stripers throught the summer. Works pretty well because they are eating the same thing as big brown trout. Not sure what the bonus would be big brown trout or a striper....hmmmmm...... Shall we run a sample trip on Wednesday evening Justin? My Youtube Channel
