Nice looking fly. I'm a decent (not good) enough fly tier but I really have trouble with the hackle on my soft hackles. They never look quite right. Any advice?

thanks,

Greg

Greg this fly's hackle was tied in by the tip with no more than 2 turns of hackle then tied off.

I like my soft hackle tied somewhat swept back as opposed to spider like. I take the first wrap up close to the hackle as to tie them back, then form the head. I sometimes use this method called a distribution wrap and works great for small flys...Dano

Thanks for the link to that video. You could very easily control the exact length of the hackle using that technique. It may be less bulky also. I'll have to try this on some super small soft hackles tonight.

Luke, I did mean to add that you can pull the hackle and size it for what effect you want. I think that was the reason for them coming up with the distribution wrap...sizing especially for small flys.

Hey Greg,

Classes should start back up sometime this month I think. If you can make one of the tying classes I would be glad to help you with the tying the collar of hackle in. Once you get it, you get it. There is nothing like seeng somebody actually tie it. I think that makes a big difference in learning how to tie a pattern.

It always helped me when I watched. :-)
