They never look quite right. Luke Posted August 8, 2006 Share Posted August 8, 2006 Greg Fly Anglers Online has an exerpt from The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying by Ted Leeson and Jim Schollmeyer that you might find informative. They are using Partridge in the book, but any soft hackle will do. I like to use Conranch JV Hen Hackle for my soft hackle flies. Danoinark Posted August 8, 2006 Author Share Posted August 8, 2006 Greg this fly's hackle was tied in by the tip with no more than 2 turns of hackle then tied off. I like my soft hackle tied somewhat swept back as opposed to spider like. I take the first wrap up close to the hackle as to tie them back, then form the head. I think that was the reason for them coming up with the distribution wrap...sizing especially for small flys. If you can make one of the tying classes I would be glad to help you with the tying the collar of hackle in. Once you get it, you get it. There is nothing like seeng somebody actually tie it. I think that makes a big difference in learning how to tie a pattern.
