Greg Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Dano Nice looking fly. I'm a decent (not good) enough fly tier but I really have trouble with the hackle on my soft hackles. They never look quite right. Any advice? thanks, Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
Luke Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Greg Fly Anglers Online has an exerpt from The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying by Ted Leeson and Jim Schollmeyer that you might find informative. They are using Partridge in the book, but any soft hackle will do. I like to use Conranch JV Hen Hackle for my soft hackle flies. They work better for me. --Luke
Danoinark Posted August 8, 2006 Author Posted August 8, 2006 Greg this fly's hackle was tied in by the tip with no more than 2 turns of hackle then tied off. I like my soft hackle tied somewhat swept back as opposed to spider like. I take the first wrap up close to the hackle as to tie them back, then form the head. I sometimes use this method called a distribution wrap and works great for small flys...Dano http://www.troutflies.com/tutorials/nest/13.shtml ps Luke, this was Conranch JV Hen. Its a feather from the cape in a light brown. Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Luke Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Dano Thanks for the link to that video. You could very easily control the exact length of the hackle using that technique. It may be less bulky also. I'll have to try this on some super small soft hackles tonight. --Luke
Danoinark Posted August 8, 2006 Author Posted August 8, 2006 Luke, I did mean to add that you can pull the hackle and size it for what effect you want. I think that was the reason for them coming up with the distribution wrap...sizing especially for small flys. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"

Members BWO Posted August 9, 2006 Members Posted August 9, 2006 This is a great tip, thanks for sharing.
Jeremy Hunt Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Hey Greg, Classes should start back up sometime this month I think. If you can make one of the tying classes I would be glad to help you with the tying the collar of hackle in. Once you get it, you get it. There is nothing like seeng somebody actually tie it. I think that makes a big difference in learning how to tie a pattern. It always helped me when I watched. :-) jh Accept the drift.....<>>><flysandguides.comVisit my blog
Danoinark Posted August 9, 2006 Author Posted August 9, 2006 Jeremy That's great news, I was hoping that you would be starting back soon. See you there. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
