The store at Bennett use to rent them. If they still do the same vendor is at Roaring River. I'm not sure about Taney.

Sunburst wouldn't be a whole lot more than two hours, if that much.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

BPS has pflueger kit for $50 I will probably go with it

Go for it. That should get you started just fine.

Good luck. But be warned that getting into fly fishing can be a dangerous proposition! It starts off as such a seemingly small thing, just another way to catch fish, but it can pretty much end up taking over your life or at least a big part of it...It kind of happened to me, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I have one tip for you related to fly fishing that has nothing to do with your starting set up. If you are ever fishing and you have no idea whatsoever to tie on, make it a Woolly Bugger in #10 or 12. Whether you're fishing for trout, panfish, bluegill, or pretty much else, that's generally about as good of a bet as anything.

Awesome! Great job catching fish on your first trip with the fly rod. Anyone who says they didn't curse more than they caught their first few times fly fishing is probably lying.

$19.95?

Really?

Gotta be one big package of junk. I know I've seen some cheap setups at Walmart, but I'm sure they cost more than that. They were rated for 5-6wt, but they looked the size of a 10-12wt. I think someone would be better off renting and getting something they can actually cast properly with .

LOL....REALLY!!!! That's what they cost last time I checked. Once again, a "know-it-all" attitude might keep a fellow fly fisherman from getting a good deal. Check it out Flycaster....you might learn something.

You can buy a serviceable 5 weight Scientific Angler outfit at walmart for 70 bucks or so that includes the rod, reel, and line. That set up will be usable for trout and bass fishing in our area. That is the set up I started with, and even though I now use a St. Croix, I still keep it around as a spare. I would reccomend it for your first fly rod and reel. It won't be top quality, but you won't need a top quality set up to start with. The $19.95 set ups are junk. There's no real harm in getting one as at worst you'll only be wasting 20 bucks, but if your first experience fly fishing is with one of these outfits, you're probably not going to enjoy yourself very much.

You'll want a better rod than the Scientific Angler as you get further into fly fishing, and maybe you'll even get into the bamboo thing eventually. But it's best to start simple.

OTR, I appreciate your openmindedness in regard to beginnesr equipment, but your "junk" comment is funny. Ive fished right alongside dozens of fishermen at Taneycomo....and caught more then they did....on a $19.95 rig. Have done the same in Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. I don't badmouith the expensive equipment or those who use it, but it's comical to read how some would advise a beginner.

Congratulations BigMinnow! Did you rent the equipment? If so, would you mind telling me what it cost you for an afternoon of outdoor pleasure at the beautiful places where fish exist? If you don't want to tell me, I understand. None of my business, but I'm just curious.

Chambug I bought a fly kit at Bass Pro for $50, and went fishing on the finely river.

I did go by Walmart check out their equipment then I went to bass pro and I bought the bass pro brand because I feel that the pfulger set was a better product for me. I am already picking out my next one but first I need to get some other stuff.

I have no problem buying "cheap" equipment I still use ultralight poles and micro spins I bought at wal-mart many years ago and use them more then I do my more expensive rods and reels, however I do believe quality does cost more money.

The important thing is....you got you a rig that suited you at the time, and it worked for you. I hope you soon have the thrill of feeling a good-sized trout on your line, no matter what it cost.

Besides, at least half the fun is being where the trout are and giving it your best shot...right?
