There is something about the current that draws me to fish rivers over lakes. Fighting a fish in the current is another thing that distinguishes the two - even small fish can put up a challenge in strong current.

One thing I've wondered about in relation to topwater fishing in rivers is where you guys apply it - I would guess that topwater baits work in the pools (like like they do on a lake), but do they work in faster water too?

Most topwaters are rather tough to fish in fast water, but they still work there if you can fish them. Buzzbaits work well in faster current, poppers and walk the dog topwaters are a lot tougher. Pretty much, if the current is rather smooth, meaning the surface is not real choppy and roiling, all topwaters work. But you may have to play angles. Fishing cross-current in strong current is a problem because your line will bow downstream and the lure will be tougher to work. You may be able to make it work in that sort of place by holding your rod tip high and keeping most of the line off the water. Same thing applies to eddies, where the lure is in current moving one way and you're in current moving the other.

But I fish topwaters everywhere, not just in pools.
