I've only been fly fishing once with a guide on the White and we mostly just drifted some egg patterns. I had fun and caught a fair number of fish.

I am now hoping to learn the fly fishing ropes when it comes to fishing the area. My main focus will be Taneycomo and the White. I have all the general necessary equipment. Now I just need some pointers from my fellow fisherman. I'm going to be in the area from June 30-July 4 weekend.

1. Based off of most everything I have read it sounds as though there is alot of generation so I'm guessing wading is out of the question? So if boating on higher water what is the best tactic?

2. Like I said I am a virgin when it comes to fly fishing and correct lingo so what (flies/patterns) would a beginning fly fisherman use and also how to fish certain flies for my best chances at catching some trout on Taney and the White?

Also, what type of variety should I have in my fly case? eggs, midge patterns, san juan worm, wooly bugger, pheasant tail nymph, soft hackle flies?

So as you can see I just need help in general to get started. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

1. I think you could expect mostly high water during that period you will be at Taneycomo and also on the White. The flooding this Spring has caused high levels of water on the lakes. If you are not comfortable fishing high water it would be a great idea to hire a guide for the day. I would also suggest you have the guide provide some instruction as to flies, technique and other aspects of the water you will be fishing.

2. The patterns you mentioned are all effective on the area tail waters.

as a side note you might consider a trip over to Roaring River State Park near Cassville for a day of fly fishing. Midges, woolley buggers, and small dry fly patterns should hook you up with a few trout and a good place to hone up on your fly fishing skills.

Find the book "Fly Fishing for Trout in Missouri" by Chuck Tryon. It outlines approaches, flies, and locations in the state to fish. It is an awesome book to the "virgin".
