Kayaked down the James yesterday hoping to catch a mess of logperch. I caught more google-eye than anything. I think they were behind every rock. I did catch about 8 large and smallmouth bass, nothing with any size. I also did the trick where you misscast over a branch and before you try to retrive the lure, while it is dangling from the branch, you dance it on top of the water. I caught the biggest largemouth of the day using this method. Not long after that I spotted the elusive logperch. I was not sure which logperch lure to use, but as you can see I chose correctly.

That bait over the limb has a name in my neck of the woods, "doodle sockin". We used to do that a lot with top water baits in the early fall on James and Sac.

Wow, if you had stayed at it you would have had a mess of logperch.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Umm...your "largemouth" are spotted bass--at least that's what the two in the photos are.

I love logperch. I've kept them in my aquarium, and watched them using their conical snout to flip over gravel pebbles looking for aquatic insects. They aren't easy to keep because it takes a lot of "training" to get them to eat anything that isn't alive. But they are really cool little fish, one of the largest members of the darter family. Since walleye are also in the same family, I bet that if you wanted to work at getting enough of them, logperch would be very good to eat.
