Members skeeterzx Posted July 9, 2011 Members Posted July 9, 2011 I have searched the archives looking for some information, but cannot find any. I am looking to covert to side imaging and have a few questions. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I currently run Lowrance for both of my graphs. My console graph is a LCX-104C and my front graph is an LMS-520C. Both are color graphs with GPS. My graphs operate independently of each other. Therefore, I cannot share waypoints between the two units. I am interested in networking my untis and would like to konw which manufacturer offers the best system. I know that I want SI capability, but I am also interested in DI. Is there a unit that performs both? I am leaning towards the Hummingbird 998C SI for my console unit. I would like to view SI/DI from the bow. What is my best option to combo? Am I wrong for leaning towards Hummingbird? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[/quot I just bought Lowrance HDS 7 units for the bow and console with the down/side scan imaging. They are tied togother so you can share points, etc. The guys at Bass Pro were really helpful. I love the images but I am not really educated enough to use them properly to locate fish. One of the sales guys is a guide with the same set up as me so I think I am going to take a trip with him and do some dropshotting and learn to locate fish.Sorry I cant help much. They said the hummingbird units werent as good on the side scan.
Dutch Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 I have the Lowrance units and my bud has the Bird. I went with Low because that is what I already had and knew some of the terminology. I can't even turn his Birds on and have no way of changing anything while he is up front. That being said I have fished with him many hours and we have used his and mine for locating stuff. I don't see a lot of difference in the side scan and down scan but the Bird 2d sonar is IMO inferior to the Low. The main difference with them is Bird is self contained and the Low has to have an additional lss 1 unit for each to have down and side. I did some checking around and saved several hundred dollars when I bought. If you decide to get something, pm me and I'll tell you about it.

You can Ethernet the 798, 898 to the 998 at the console with a single cable, set the units up to share and accomplish what your looking for. What you need to consider is what screen size you're wanting at the bow. The 798 will work fine however, with the smaller screen I usually recommend shooting right or left as shooting both directions takes up a lot of screen and you will loose some detail. If I were purchasing I'd go with the 898 or 998 up front also if you want SI/DI on the bow.
Members Doug Vahrenberg Posted July 20, 2011 Members Posted July 20, 2011 Humminbird has been providing Side Imaging Technology since 2004. Easy to install and self contained with all elements in a single transducer. Side Imaging is awesome on the trolling motor as well as the transom. With Humminbird you can Ethernet and share transducer, GPS and Temp Probes. The neat part is you can mount a transducer to either location without any extra accessories and share the data as you desire. Simple to operate and easy to understand and produces awesome images. Humminbird offers many advanced features that allow you to use the units as you desire. Like SI Enhance SHarpness that is the most awesome fish finding tool for SI Images, Contour Mode, Switchfire 2D Sonar System and Down Imaging with 3 user selectable widths...Plus they help maintain your investment with downloads for many years after your investment...SI units from 2004 still being supported with new free to download updates.
Jason Essary Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Not to steal the topic, but have anouther question about the hummingbirds. Got one last year and love it. Only thing I would like to improve is that when on TR and idling down a bank, the side imagining on the bank side seems to always be void of cover, just a hard return. Away from the bank shows cover nicely. I have tested this, waypointing brush on the off bank side as it shows and then passing it on the deep side to get the banks side image, and it hardly ever shows. Also if I drive straight towards the bank I get good views on both sides. Is this because of the angle of the bank being steep or is there a setting that I can change to make it better.
