Chris King Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 My father-in-law and I fished around point 5 and over in Spring Branch this evening from 7-9. I noticed as I was picking him up at his dock that there were a lot of fish suspended at 15'. We got over to Spring Branch and started counting the grub down while sitting in 30-35' of water. As soon as it hit 15' we would get bit. We had over 10 with three or four keepers mixed in, all spotted bass with one little smallmouth. We had a blast catching them and I'm hoping they stick around tomorrow. I fished up at Rock Lane on the way in and had a few small ones doing the same. Hopefully, it's a 'any gravel point' type of thing.

Moved over to point 5 and got a couple nice smallmouth with a white spoon (15-20' on bottom). Fished from 5-9. Might bass fish tonight and go for trout in the morning.
Members Bobby P. Posted July 9, 2011 Members Posted July 9, 2011 How do you count down a grub? Does it differ depending on the weight of your jig?
abkeenan Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Measure out your line against how long your pole is (6ft,7ft,etc). Let the grub sink next to the boat and count how long it takes until that amout of line you measured is gone. You can then calculate how long it takes for the grub/jighead to get to a certain depth. For example: If it takes 3 seconds to drop 6 feet then you can estimate that falls at 2 ft per second. So if you want it at 15 feet after it hits the water wait about 7-8 seconds and start swimming it back.
Members Bobby P. Posted July 10, 2011 Members Posted July 10, 2011 Thank you!!! I learn so much on this forum!!! I am headed to my Dad's for 10 days tomorrow. He lives over at Twin Island. I make it down 5 days every May. About 10-14 days every July and about 5 days in September. Been doing that for about 35 years now out of Beardsley. Dad retired there 17 years ago and I intend to do the same. I sure evny you guys who can fish everyday!! But here in Nebraska and with 15 year old and 12 year old boys eating me out of house and home and I am going to have to work a few more years. I have an older 19' Nitro with red gel coat/150 merc. I will be around the dam, clevenger, beardsley, jakes branch, moonshine and maybe big Indian the 12th-19th. If you see me and want to stop by I would love to say hello. I will be by myself, I am thinking, at 5:30 in the morning or later in the day one or both of my boys may be with me. I spend a lot of time on the point that goes into Clevenger right across from the condos and in the middle of the day I may troll the island out in front of Clevenger and the shelf that runs from the island toward Clevenger. Maybe in the pontoon with a cover on the back half in the afternoon if I can get out there. Hope to see some of you this week.
