Members crappieslayer Posted July 12, 2011 Members Posted July 12, 2011 I moved to the Ozarks 2 years ago from MN. I've never heard a sunfish called a perch in my life until I moved here. In MN, bluegills, pumpkinseeds, etc are 'sunfish'. Here is a picture of a perch. I have to agree with powerdive on this one! And yes, thanks for the report OG, I love seeing reports from the upper end as I usually launch at Cape! LOVE the prices at the store too, I can't believe how reasonable they are!
rps Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Yellow perch, right? Although many I've seen are as much green as they are yellow. They are growing in Bull Shoals now and I hope they become the dominant bream there.
Members crappieslayer Posted July 12, 2011 Members Posted July 12, 2011 Yes, yellow perch they are! When fishing in MN and Canadian water for walleyes, you can really get into some dandy perch. Some pushing 13-14"! And I'll tell you what, they are pretty darn close to the same awesome taste as a walleye! In fact, many guys go 'perch fishing' just for that reason. Could be another species to chase in the Shoals someday when they get big, but they can be pesky at the same time!

Fished at Bull with Rangerman last week and caught some very nice perch (10+") AND monster gills mixed in with the walleyes. If somebody wanted to target perch at Bull Shoals, you could potentially bring in a monster, better-than-Devils-Lake type stringer. They're doing very well in there, now that they're established, and I don't know of anyone who's specifically targeting them. Yet.
rps Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Read somewhere the walleye is to the yellow perch as the bass is to the sunfish/goggle eye/warmouth/rock bass. Makes sense it would eat well. I never ate one, although I caught them when my father took me to Canada back in the dark ages.
rangerman Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I caught about a dozen or so total last week counting the day with PD...there is enough there to target once you find them. I'd rather catch what eats them though.
Hunter91 Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Is there a limit on Yellow Perch on Bull Shoals in Arkansas or Missouri? Not that I have to worry about it, never have caught more than two in a trip down there but they do eat well :-)
