Members RippinLips Posted July 19, 2011 Members Posted July 19, 2011 Today I was bass fishing with a fly rod real smart I know. My rod was a 5 weight and I hooked up with a huge bass and BAM!!!! it snapped in two. To bad i did not land the fish because the line broke. Lucky me I have warranty.
Zack Hoyt Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 I fish for bass more than trout with a fly rod.....how did the rod break? I have never even had one come close to snapping. Welcome to the forum. Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions

Welcome to the forum. Ya, but what weight were you using? This was a huge bass that was caught, weighed, released, and bragged about before. 10 lbs, and not to mention the run it made when it was hooked.

Gavin Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 Good one Cricket....I've broken at least at least two or three rods in the past year....all of them my own darn fault...New blank & components came in today though.

AWWWWWWWW.....you mean you didn't have a big ol' Ugly Stick with 20 lb. test line so you could wolf him in skippin across the top of the water? What a shame! (I'M smilin')
3wt Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 I've seen one rod snap in half while the guy was tring to get a snag loose. I saw the whole thing and he really didn't pull that hard. The next fish would have doen the same thing to it regardless of size. I'd say if this happens, it's a flaw in the rod or damage, and it's a matter of time. I just can't see a reason for this to happen in the thicker part of the middle of a rod before the tip woudl break.
Gavin Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 I've snapped plenty of rods tips..usually the result of a previous damage, or negligence......but I've also snapped a few rods at the ferrules before...make sure those ferrules are tight and check them occassionally. Cheers.
