Members joe2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Members Posted July 25, 2011 Been looking at corland 333 line but I heard good things about the rio gold. I like the price of cortland though. How good is the cortland line and what is the differnce in this 40 line compared to the 80 line
Idylwilde Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 I can just tell you that Cortland has been making line & cord since before WW2 and They make some great fly line and the camo tippet is also a great product. I have used the 333 WF5 line and had no complaint at all. I have used the Rio Wind Cutter and I had an issue in warm water of the first 10 yards getting heavy after a few hours of fishing. It was fair in cold water, but the prices compared the the 333 was a little high. Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
Danoinark Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Been looking at corland 333 line but I heard good things about the rio gold. I like the price of cortland though. How good is the cortland line and what is the differnce in this 40 line compared to the 80 line I doubt you would find a tinkers damn worth of difference in the two. I would go with Cortland. As Idlewylde says they have been in the biz along time. This says a lot for them, and as far as I am concerned their 444 Peach is the finest fly line ever manufactured. FlyFishinFool Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 I would also go with the Cortland. Rio has been having some manufacuring issues with the Rio gold (I was told this directly from a customer service individual at Rio). The problem usually shows up with the outer plastic portion of the line cracking and/or breaking right at the base of the welded loop. I had 2 Rio Gold lines replaced by Rio - a WF5F was replaced once, and a WF4F was replaced twice, all due to the outer coating breaking at the base of the welded loop. Net result is that you get a hinging effect on your line, specially when casting drys or other light flies. I have talked to several people that have experienced this exact same defect - the issue occurs primarily with fast or med-fast rods, the line outer coating is apparently just too soft for faster rods. The Rio Gold appears to work OK for medium or slow rods, so you may want to use it if that is the flex of your rod. * ´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> `•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((º> .¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."
troutbum479 Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 I've gone through 4 Rio lines, and have Rio LT on my 3wt. right now. I usually go through a line a year. Mainly because of hard use and not treating it after use. I just picked up some Airflo ridge line for my 5wt. that im going to try out this weekend. When you start getting into specialty lines like Rio Clouser, Rio Smallmouth the higher priced line is by far the best choice. The only Cortland line that I would buy is the Lazerline, made to last a long time. In the end its your rod and reel and your money. You may want to check you the Rio mainstream. arkmoflyfishing.blogspot.com http://okietroutbum.blogspot.com/
3wt Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 I'm really bummed to hear about quality problems with Rio. I'm a big fan of the Grand, but have never tried the Gold. The dry tip thing they have really seems to help the annoying tip sink that most lines eventually develop. Maybe look into the grand if you have a fastish rod. For me it was an amazing jump up from SA GPX, which I also loved until I tried the grand. I've never cast cortland, but do imagine you would not be disapointed.
Geoff Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 I forget which Rio i ahve on my 3wt but i like it quiet a bit. "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
