rcguy
I came down last night in a spur of the moment trip. Started by the islad at the horn. Fished the island until 12 and caught 14. Slow I thought. Fished all color size 18 midges and definately did the best on a Rusty Midge with copper bead. That was the color. Caught one on a john deer and 1 on a zebra midge. No takers on a hares ear or copper John. I fished up at the spring this evening and caught one. Really slow up there. I was trying a soft hackle that normally works pretty well up there. finally got one to come up for a Renegade. It was 104 degrees today so I napped during the hottest part of the day in the AC!!! Love the Motel AC! Yes, I'm a wuss. I'm gonna fish in the morning and head home. Not as people here as I expected. I guess the heat is keeping them away. From 4 o'clock to 6 I fished the highbank hole and caught a couple. That's probably the coolest part of the stream because there is lots shade and a breeze coming thru the bridge. People told me Olive has been the color but not for me. --Jerry

I should be down there around 10:30 or 11:00am. I was planning on leaving about 5 and be there early but my no good boss wants to see me to find out what I have been doing for the last month out of town.LOL I have been up in Hannibal MO for the last 4 weeks and home on the weekends. Hopefully I can find a spot in CG 5 for the weekend. If you are still there I'll look for you.
jjtroutbum
Thanks for the report Jerry I have been really needing to get down myself. And now your report has added to the feeling of urgency. Rich go right ahead and rip a ton of lips seems I will not be down anytime soon. And having to deal with the usual wake of sore mouths you always leave behind. NoLuck
Well it's a good thing I brought my tying gear. 7x tippet and me being a little over anxious tends to be a bad combo. I fished between the gaugexhkuse and the first handicap wing from 3 till 6:30 and pretty much knocked them silly. I went through 3 midges though. I used the same type of midge from the start. I should tie up a about 3 dozen or so of these things . I'll let you know how tomorrow goes.
rcguy
Well Rich, I'm just getting back to this site now that I am back at work. I took off at 11:30 on sat. I fished the morning in zone 2 and caught a few on midges and and several on Renegades and Grifiths Knats. Drys were alittle slow but mucho fun!!! Caught several real small and several really nice ones. If your secret midge is the one I think it is...well, I tried it some but got more hits on the Rusty midge. JJ, go fishing, dude!! NoLuck
Jerry, I need to give you a couple of my midges that I tie. I tried your rusty midges Sunday afternoon and only caught 3 fish on it in about 30 mins. I also tried a couple of other things but went back to my normal midge and picked up about 20-25 fish from 2pm till 5 pm. The only place I fished Sunday was just below the gauge house. I spent most of the morning packing up and drying out the canvas on the pop up. I looked for your car but didn't see it. If I would have seen you I would have looked you up. Heck you could have stayed with me as I am usually by myself anyway. I fished a couple of drys late Saturday and picked up a few here and there. I fished the 3wt most of the time. There seems to be some bigger fish in there too. Still plenty of small ones too though. Let me know when you are headed back down. I have a small leak on the roof of my camper around the roof vent that I need to get figured out pretty quick. I think the caulk around it is leaking. Other wise I guess I'll see you in the end of the month. Cya.
rcguy
Looks like the end of the month is a little ify right now. I may have to be out of town that weekend (family deal). The Rusty midge was always on the bottom of the 2 fly rig and that's where I caught the fish. That could have been a depth issue. Anyway, I probably should have caught more on Olive, Zebra, and P and P. Hopefully we'll get together this year. Sept and Oct are open pretty much. We'll keep in touch and maybe we can get JJtroutbum to meet us down there.
NoLuck
Sounds good Jerry. October will be a bust for me. Looks like I'll be out west for close to 4-5 months this winter. Darn the bad luck.
brittsnbirds
So did the fish grow at all since the middle of the summer? When I was down in June they were small. Rich, so were you using your "special" unit?? Still trying to find the right colored thread to tie it. I think I will see if the boss will give me a kitchen pass from Thursday on till Sunday. Get one last hoorah in before school starts. Pat

Nothing special. If you catch the hatch on the beginning of the emerging bugs this midge is lights out. The only thing I can figure is that it matches the hatch of all those little cream midges. If work plays out right I will be down Friday morning.
