Muddy Fork

Well,

it was dam sure nuff HOTT yesterday..

Fished the little Muddy for an hour before dark.

2 on the drop shot (roboworm)

2 on the tiny torpedo (bullfrog)

there's a group of smallies that I've been watching but coudln't get them to bite.

They decided to bite the drop shot after using all the other usual stuff.

I was bummed when I hooked the biggest one and had it pull free at the last minute,

I decided to leave and let them rest, since I planned to return with a midget topwater.

sure enough, I caught 2 of the bigguns after dark with the torpedo.

Both 15" smallies, one of them was blind in the left eye.

Maybe that why it didnt bite, maybe I need to buy it some reading glasses.

Persistance pays off,

  • 2 weeks later...

I fished the MF for the last 2 hrs of daylight yesterday.

The creek had risen about 3ft overnight and had fallen out about a foot.

It was pretty clear on top and stained on the bottom.

I tried fishing jigs as I went downstream, making precise pitches to logs and undercut banks.

Zero bites..

I turned back after wading for a mile downstream, then pulled out the old buzzbait.

I be dammed if the counter rotating blades didnt foul themselves up.

It was a surfboard instead of a buzzbait now.

So, I got frustrated and went back to the jig.

I found this old log that had previously been too shallow, but was prime with higher/swifter water.

Pitched that jig in there and got hung. "dam current" as I waded out to retrieve my bait.

I stuck the rod out to the log and reeled down to free the line.

Thats when the smallie tried to pull the rod out of my hands.

Here I stand in waist deep water with a 3# smallie just a couple feet from the end of the rod tip.

The bastard jumped and did a cartwheel as it tore the hook loose and flipped me the bird.

That figures...

I didn't get another bite, but I know what to do next time around.

It still raining and that should keep the water up for a while.

Glad to hear your getting some rain. Was down a couple of weeks ago and it was as HOT as I have been in 10+ years. The creek is constantly changing. The "Hole" where we fished with y'all last time is gone WAHHHHHH. Waded downstream and found some really nice holes with plenty of fish. I wish I would have brought a Pop-R with me as there were some nice ones in the shallows just below the areas where the cool spring fed creeks meet with Crooked Creek and they were busting at what I am assuming were small minnows as there were tons of them everywhere. And dont worry, you'll get the 3# next time.

Andy,

whats up my friend?

Good to hear you made a trip this year.

That deep hole you described washed away last year, if I'm thinking correctly.

Can't imagine what it looks like now.

A couple of medium size floods should dig out the channel again.

We've had 5" of rain overnight, I don't think it was too heavy in your set of woods.

I was using the same exact jig that I gave you last time we fished.

Its a producer.
