NoLuck Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Rich and FFM, You guys are killing me. I would love to try and make it the last weekend of August (27th-29th). Was trying to make it this past weekend but had to take care of some business. I had to put one of my Brittany's (Biscuit) down Saturday. It was the wife's dog and her decision. It was a tough weekend around our place. Now that I'm down to just Junior and Dixie I might be able to get away more. I'll just have to load up 2 dogs, in the past it was stupid to try and deal with 3 down there. Dixie is a camping pro and her dad Junior will do fine. That being said I will check with the war department and see if I can get a pass!! Pat, Sorry to hear about your Brit. Besides not having a place for a dog and traveling as much as I do, that is one of the reasons of me not having a dog. As much as I like them, I just can't deal with losing them like that. A good friend of mine had a boxer that was just like one of the guys. He went every where we went. When he put him down it bothered me to no end. I hope you get to make it down next weekend. My brother is pumped up to go this year. He went and bought a Winston BIIT and an Abel TR2 reel. Depending on how busy it is the 25th I may even leave that evening to head down. I should be leaving to go to AZ somewhere around the 17th of Sept and be gone till close to the week before X-Mas and then gone from the first Monday in Jan till probably mid March. 6-7 weeks in AZ then back to Hoover Dam again. It is still kinda sketchy though. I may have to come home to run a couple of jobs in Saint Louis in there. If I am home for the holidays I will make it down for some winter fishing for sure. Hope to see you the last weekend of the month. Rich ]
rcguy Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Sorry to hear about your dog, Pat. It's always hard to put them down. We have had two we had to put down and I still miss them. I have not been down for a few weeks and I have some family duties next weekend the 26th and 27th so I'll guess I'll shoot for Sept. A friday or Sat or both. Over the last 3 or 4 years I have met several people down there when we planned a get together. It has been fun to put a face to the name. As a matter of fact I took a friday trip last year late in the summer and started fishing by the island. I wasn't there an hour and I met saw flyfishnfool and PaolaCat that I have met in the past. It was just by coincidence we were there at the same time. We had a good time shooting the bull as we fished. Several years ago I met NoLuck, JJtroutbum, Cricket, Britsnbirds, and others. I think the get togethers have been fun and educational. I really appreciate all the help and information I have gotten for the guys on this forum. It took me 40 years to finally feel more comfortable fly fishing and it has all been from the information I have gotten here and from you guys in person. I hope we can all meet down there again even if it is the first week of catch and release. Jerry
FlyFishinFool Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 We really need to coordinate these OA get togethers a little better. FFM, I too would have enjoyed putting a face to a name and knowing that I was fishing beside you. So cool you introduced another young gal to flyfishing. What a wonderful spot (for a trout park anyway) to experience your first trout on a fly. Let me know what weight rod she gets as Emma will want to send her a Pink Flamingo furled leader. Also glad you were finally able to get down to the park and enjoy the awesome weather. Nice break from the recent heatwave. Noluck spotted my orange OA hat and we got to talking. I will say Rich sure knows how to rip some lips with those magic midges he ties. His 10 to my 1 Friday evening really said that! Thanks Rich for showing me "the way"! A leader swap for a hot fly pattern and technique is a great deal anyday in my book. Seth will eventually come around to the way of the midge. Seth and I struggled to find a consistent pattern this trip. A beetle pattern on top then a cat hair soft hackle fished under an indicator worked for awhile Thursday up by the dam for me while Seth rotated between an olive leech, a marabou midge, an olive scud, etc picking up several the last hour. Friday was about the same. We were both somewhat disapointed there wasn't more consistent dry fly action. Seth usually does well on top. Sat and Sun I fished alot with the midges and finally started to get the knack of the midge drift picking up several in the seam right below the riffles on Sun. Overall a wonderful father/son camping trip and can't wait till the next one. I'm going to try to get back down on the 28th for the day if all goes well. Hope to see you Rich and hopefully other OA anglers then too. ksbass, No kidding - I was down there Sun through today (Friday) and if I had known you were there on Sunday I would have tried to look you up. I did manage to finally break one of your spiderwire furled leaders, a 4wt I had been using since June 2010. I also finally switched out the 5wt spiderwire furled leader that I had also been using for more than a year as well. I guess you could say I got my $$ worth out of those leaders. So, I will send you a note via email and then snail-mail a check to order a couple more of your leaders - they simply cannot be beat! Back to the fishing report, I spent most of my time up in zone-1 throwing midges using a couple of your furled leaders. Had a decent week - caught fish every day on a "slow-to-medium but steady" pace, and caught quite a few nice fish in the 1-2 lb size. I used primarily green, olive, brown, and off-white midges; changing colors as the fish got tired of one or the other. Mostly size 16, but dropping down to size 18 when the water flow dropped a bit. Once the crowd from the weekend left, the park was very lightly populated. I think most of the crowd was due to the fact that this was the last weekend before most of the area schools started classes. Most mornings and evenings there were no more than 4-8 people fishing zone-1 from the wheelchair access fishing piers all the way down to the big hole above the hatchery dam. RCguy would have loved fishing the island - this morning I was the only person fishing the entire length of the island from the whistle until 10AM! Maybe we can make connections the next time you are heading down! * ´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> `•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((º> .¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."
rcguy Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 How about a day in October or a year end get together? Just askin'
brittsnbirds Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 The Wife made me get reservations couple times in September (9/9, 9/16) as well as October (10/14 and 10/28). Unless something happens (in my case is very likely) I'll be there on those weekends.

I would like to take off early like around noon. But have to check with the boss. If not I'll be leaving around 4. Hopefully I can get a place in 5 by then. Unless you beat me down and save me one! The best of my recollection it's been over a year since we ripped some lips together!! Bring the picture of my big brown that I snagged on the island!!

Bring the picture of my big brown that I snagged on the island!! Yeah it's been a while Pat. I should be down the 26th early am at the latest. I am trying to sneak out of work early Thursday and go home and load up. Depending on how tired I am I may leave that evening. I wish I knew a way to save you a spot in CG 5. If you can convince the people running the booth to let me pay for your spot you can pay me back when you get there. You may even be able to get something in 4. I have duplicates of that pic here someplace. Now I am going to have to dig around through multiple months of junk mail to find it. LOL
brittsnbirds Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Pat, Independent yes. Financially?? Well almost for a single guy that has to work all the time. Yes I bought a Winston BIIIX. Sad thing is I have only fished it for about 2 hours. LOL Check your personal message. Pat
