Don Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Some factors involved. Alaska, sounds like big fish. Alot has to do with the rod weight compared to the chore at hand. What pound tippet/leader and how far the drag is torqued? Too much stuff on some rods are gonna do them in in the wrong circumstances. Michael Kyle set me up with a beginner rig years ago for local trout; Signature series 8' 4wt. For awhile it was all I had so I threw it all. I can not count how many times Brad Wright large dumbell sculpin patterns smacked my little rod; sounded like a 22 going off. It still fishes great. Don May Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
Members jmo Posted April 15, 2008 Members Posted April 15, 2008 I own pro 2wt. and tcir 6wt. both rods have worked so well I have sold 2 Orvis 1Loomis and a SP sage and only use thes TFO's. To the Tuff enough I was fortunate hook and land a 13# Bow with the 2wt. can't say more. JMO

My fault not the rod. 25 buck sand 4 days later I had it back from TFO ready to fish. Recently I purchased a 4wt. signature series. I like rigging both with a heavier line. On my 6wt. I use 7wt. line on the 4wt. I use 5wt. line. TFO rods are usually a little stiffer, faster action and with the heavier line I feel the rod loads much better that when using the rated line wt. In comparison I have a 7wt. Reddinton that I would never use a heavier line wt. on. Fair Winds and Following Seas Kevin
drew03cmc Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 In my opinion, the need for overlining is due to the "cheaper" materials the rods are made from. It tends to be stiffer , and thus the need for overlining to get the feel you desire. However, I might grab me a 2wt TFO Pro and a BBS I Orvis reel to throw for MOST everything! Andy
trout fanatic Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 I own 2 TFO pros. A 9 ft 5wt and a 10 ft 7 wt. The 7 wt is my wintertime steelhead rod and I cannot imagine fishing in tougher conditions than fishing in a lake erie trib in a December snow storm (unless of course if its fishing in Alaska in a september snowstorm). That being said, I am pretty happy with both rods, they do what I ask of em and if they break I get new ones. Good deal to me!
