mic Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I was at the car dealer waiting on my car, and decided to tie some. I tied up a batch of Griffith's Gnats, but as I was leaving I realized I forgot the herl. Should a keep them or take a razor to 'em. I hate to waist six feathers.
stlfisher Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I'd use them...I bet they would still work just fine....just think of it as grizzly crackleback of sorts. Or maybe wind some type of flash in between the hackle wraps? Either way I bet they would work just fine. When I mess up realy bad if the fly is remotely fisable it usually goes into my bluegill fishing box...or if it is downright awful it get's stripped down and becomes a scud or Wolley bugger. I not at all surprised to find I have plenty of those flies.
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Send them to me, They work great on Taney if you keep track of the midge hatches. By the way, I don't always use herl if I'm in a hurry. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
podum Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Absolutely use them. I tie all of my gnats without the herl wrapped, but instead with one or two strands along the shank (like a crackleback). I've just had better luck with the less bulky profile. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
mic Posted August 21, 2011 Author Posted August 21, 2011 Thanks all...I'll try em out once the water cools a little or at Bennett over Labor Day.
