I've been trying to get to the Current with my 11 & 12 year old daughters for a couple of summers now but haven't been able to work it into our schedule. I'm thinking about trying the weekend of Sept 17-18. How big and obnoxious would the crowd be on a Saturday or Sunday by that time? It's about a 4 hour drive for us, so I don't want to come all that way to play bumper boats or put up with a lot of nonsense. -SS

There will always be crowds on most weekends during the summer. I wouldn't expect solitude, but I don't think the river will be completely overrun with peope either. There is a fly fishing tournament in the Blue Ribbon Stretch that weekend that may add to the traffic on if you plan to hit the upper stretch. I will be down that weekend myself.

It shouldnt be too bad in that timeframe...Kids are all back in school now, and it wasnt bad last Saturday. We floated Akers to Pulltite with a group of 20 or so...The company & the cooler fishing was top notch, but the catching was lousy (its always is on that stretch)...I'd pick a different reach if you want to catch fish...I'd probably do Baptist to Cedar, or Cedar to Akers in that timeframe because gigging season opens on September 15th. There will probably be quite a few gig boats out in the evenings below Akers. Cheers.

We floated Round Spring to Jerktail that exact time frame a couple years back and the crowds were medium to low and actually quite pleasant. The giggers were out in force and many gravel bars were taken but the giggers make for fine scenery in the evening, you can watch the shadows and shapes of the gigs by the lamp and firelight and it's quite beautiful really. I would highly recommend it.

The crowds really shouldnt be that bad honestly...that time of year is quieter because kids are back in school and the temps are a little cooler so you dont have nearly as many floaters IMO, and the ones you do see are usually fishing and are pretty respectful.

stream slalker,

I really hate to pop your bubble but Sept 17 would not be a good day to fish the Current River. Did you know there is a Trout Fishing tournament on the Current River that day?

Here are the details: Current River Tournament

Now if you wish to participate in the tournament that would be great but if you are going down for pleasure... not so good.
