Nortrad Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 I have been at this hopper thing for a while and you have to do a little homework to figure when and where to fish the hoppers. There is 1 section of the Current that I believe is the only PRIMO hopper water. I am surprised it hasn't been better this year with how dry it's been. We should be up there this month for our annual fall trip, I will be chuckin' big foam nasties for sure! Maybe they will work...maybe they won't. I'm gonna find out either way. I wish it woulda fished better for ya man. That dang river can be so fickle sometimes. Yeah hopefully I will get a couple of more chances. Will concentrate more on where to throw and plop these bugs. Gotta keep trying.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 What should work really good down there and I have never really heard much is the other terrestrials we have like beetles and ants. I can't recall reading a report of anyone fishing them really. I imagine guys have fished them, why wouldn't you? If the conditions are right when we are down there, I'm thinking some double dry action in the right sections could be deadly. I might be dead wrong though, I'm just an average Joe like the rest of you but I like to try to think outside of the normal "nymph grind" that so many fisherman get locked into nowadays. We have spoke about this before though, just beating a dead horse. Lol. Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
Guest Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 I saw lots of hoppers on my last trip down there. I even spent about 30 minutes chasing them down and throwing them into the drift to see if they would take them. Not a single rise. Although, they seem to have a craving for yellow thingamabobbers.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Back to that nymph grind...I think fish are "seeing" so many indicators these days that they actually think they r a food source now. In the last few years, I can't begin to count how many fish have tried to eat my indicator. Taneycomo is really stupid. I might start putting a hook in my bobbers Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
ozark trout fisher Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 I might start putting a hook in my bobbers They actually have orange and pink "indicator flies" that are for that very purpose. Never tried them but it might be interesting. There have been days where it seems like they have more interest in the indicator than the fly below it. Then I'll try a dry fly with an actual hook on it and of course they'll have no interest whatsoever. It's enough to make you wonder whether fish really do have a sense of humor.
Nortrad Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 I fished a run just up from the creek entering at Parker and a rainbow came half-way out to chomp my rose-colored Thingamabobber. I then switched over to the cicada imitation and got a couple. Think I'll try a bright indicator post on a simple foam fly. Back to the 'engineering dept.'
OKFlyFisher44 Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 I'm thinking a orange, red, or lime green indicator/beetle fly. It will be the new "miracle fly" !! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
