HighPlainsFlyFisher Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Just got back from an extended weekend trip up to Iowa for some trout fishing. If you havn't seen this part of Iowa it's beautiful country filled with small spring creeks in almost every valley. The best part is that they're full of wild browns and some brookies and bows. We fished five different streams in four full days of fishing and still didn't touch the water that was available to us within an hour of camp. Pretty amazing place for someone like me who loves small streams and wild fish. Sorry about posting in General Discussion but there wasn't a spot for Iowa TR's!! I've got a full TR with lots of pics on the blog....Jeff http://highplainsflyfisher.blogspot.com/
Justin Spencer Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Wow, looks like a wonderful trip, love the pictures! ness Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Great report and nice photos. That's a beautiful area. I was up there at the beginning of August, and we hit some of the same places (South Bear, Pine). I'd swear I fished right at that rock where your rod is bent! That store in Highlandville is a great store, isn't it? Mine was a whirlwind trip though (only three days including travel), and I left wanting more -- a LOT more. I hope to get back up there soon. John
HighPlainsFlyFisher Posted September 1, 2011 Author Posted September 1, 2011 Thanks guys. That's funny you mentioned the store as we loved it as well , neat little place. It is a wonderful area if you enjoy small stream fishing , like you said Ness it leaves you wanting more because there's just so much good looking water....Jeff http://highplainsflyfisher.blogspot.com/
ness Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Here's a pic I took of the store, and the campground is to the right. Cool spot. We stayed in Decorah, but I'd definitely consider this campground based on how you described it. John
ozark trout fisher Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 I thoroughly enjoyed your blog post. Great pictures! I've been meaning to get up to the driftless area for quite awhile now, but I've never made it. I might just have to do it sometime soon.
HighPlainsFlyFisher Posted September 1, 2011 Author Posted September 1, 2011 Ness - I'd highly recommend staying at the Highlandvile Store campground , great little place with some super friendly people. OTF - Thanks....You seem to appreciate the small streams and wild fish like I do , I'd say you'd thoroughly enjoy the Driftless area. There's really nothing in Mo. to compare it too , lots of different water to choose from. StlFisher - Thanks!
Outside Bend Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Very cool- I was up in the Driftless area this past spring and loved it- amazing how gracious the landowners usually are about letting you fish "their," trout streams. Thanks for the post! <{{{><
