I bought an Abu Garcia Revo SX from Bass Pro and don't really know what to think of it. It seems like spool tension is the only way to slow down the reel and the magnetic brakes really don't have much effect even when set to 100% I can only cast about 50 yds. If this helps I was using 15 lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid line with a 3/8 oz spinnerbait.

I've had the same issues with the Abu Garcia Revo SX..

Apparently, the left brake has a 1-10 setting that has to be maxed out.

Otherwise, it leads to mega backlashing. Not good for a high end reel.

I never move that adjustment, just lock it down. Kinda worthless.

Now, it will cast properly when you adjust the brake on the right side under the drag.

this reel is awesome for pitching jigs and casting spinnerbaits.

However, it performs poorly when "long casting" crankbaits.

These are my opinions based on experience on the water.

Hope it helps

I recognize the issues you mention, but I have found I truly like the SX. It may be that I thumb more than you do or some other quirk. Regardless, I have had no trouble throwing a 3/8 ounce flat sided Top Dollar, and if you can throw one of those you can throw anything (except maybe a large buzzbait into the wind).

  • 4 weeks later...

I bought an 09 SX on closeout on a whim a couple of years ago. Had the same issues with the magnetic brakes not being adequate. It ended up on a shelf pretty quickly. I had/have several of Abu's high end reels, the Premiers, so I just bought another of those to use instead.

But I heard on the 'net that Abu was fixing that older style SX. So I contacted them and sent it in. About 1 week later, I got a brand new, current generation SX (black with red anodizing) in the mail! Was quite surprised by that. Figured they'd just fix the old one. The newer one has 2 more magnets and is a much better reel. Make sure you pull the reel apart, like any new reel, and properly clean and oil the bearings, too. Still not as good or as versatile as my Premiers, but much better than it was.

Not sure how different the Revo S is, but I love mine. Casts a little crankbait a mile. Wish I could afford 5 more of them.
