Justin Spencer Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 Been tying (and selling) a few new patterns that I am excited about. Most of my patterns involve some sort of flash, and right now I am on a prism dub kick. Been tying some prince nymph type flies with lots of flash and over the last two days have caught quite a few fish on them. Today I decided to try a new body material as I hate using peacock herl because I always break it and it never holds up well for me. This material is easy to use and turned out looking really good. See if you can tell from the picture what it is, otherwise you will have to come visit to find out. The fly in the picture is one I was so excited about I had to give it a try as soon as I tied the first one. Unfortunately some fishermen came in and bought it before I could use it. I tied a few more and went down to fantasy island where I quickly caught 2 small rainbows on the "golden child" and one on a brown version of the golden child. Hit the shallow run beside the island and had no luck so I took off my indicator, put on a size 8 psychoish princish and immediately caught two more rainbows where I had been indicator fishing with no success. Hadn't taken off the indicator in years and now I realize there is a time a place for everything, the fish are really in trouble now. Also included a pic from the night I tried striper fishing caught a few trout and this smallie on a streamer before dark (there are smallmouth on the NFOW) "The problem with a politician’s quote on Facebook is you don’t know whether or not they really said it." –Abraham Lincoln Tales of an Ozark Campground Proprietor Dead Drift Fly Shop
Snow Fly Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 Creepy said he taught you how to tie flies......he might get jealous if you start making his flies look bad................ "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
ozark trout fisher Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 It's good to hear the river is fishing well...I finally have a trip planned to it this fall, gonna spend three days or so floating it. How I have not managed to make it down to the North Fork yet I don't know, but it'll be good to change that. Knowing myself I will probably get skunked the first time if everything I hear about it being so difficult is true, but hey, there are worse things than getting skunked on a good river. I'll make sure to stop by your guys' fly shop and say hello.
Justin Spencer Posted September 10, 2011 Author Posted September 10, 2011 Not D-rib, but in the family. Creepy did teach me, but he doesn't like me bastardizing all the patterns, they don't call me the "KING of BLING" for nothing (actually no one calls me that, but I wish they did). Justin Spencer Posted September 12, 2011 Author Posted September 12, 2011 Put the golden child in the mouth of the biggest rainbow I have "almost" caught yesterday. One of those fish that you think is the bottom when you set the hook, and then it starts moving. As sson as she realized she was hooked she shot out of the water two times, but was unable to shake the fly. Looking like a football coming out of the water she made a fast downstream run before I got her turned back into the current. She then ran upstream and proceeded to dig deep and kind of hold her own, much like a big brown does when hooked. I changed the angle of my pull to try to wear her out as to not overstress her and the hook just pulled out. After the hook pulled she gave me one more jump, and I think I saw her middle fin extended. I would conservatively estimate this fish at 21" but it wouldn't surprise me if she was pushing 23-24", hopefully I can report back with a solid #. If you are reading this post fish, I know where you live so you better beware!
