Being a good rural school, Dora kids had the day off yesterday following the opening night of gigging, or bow hunting. Eli and I took advantage of this and headed to dry run for a little fly rod fun. Armed with his 7 1/2 foot 4 weight Ross Journey, it didn't take long for Eli to hook, and lose the first fish of the day. They really weren't after the egg we were using so we switched to a pink San Juan worm without much success. Rifled through the fly box and decided the shop vac might be the ticket, and sure enough it was. Moving a total of about 30 feet Eli caught and released more than a dozen fish in an hour and lost twice that number. Most were around 14" with a few smaller and a few bigger, the biggest being a 17" rainbow. I still help him quite a bit in the tight quarters, mainly to prevent tangles every 3rd cast. But he did catch several on his own, with only some frantic coaching from dear old dad. One hard thing to teach is how to let a fish run when they want to on a fly reel. Eli finally got the hang of letting them run and then bringing them in when they settle down a little. Had a great time on a great creek, only two other kids wading up and down the creek, and since we barely had to move they bothered us not a bit.

Justin - those pictures say it all , that's one happy and proud boy. Dry Run Creek is a geat little stream , I've walked the banks a few times (minus flyrod obviously) and just wished I was under sixteen again!! Looks like you've got a heckuva fishing partner there for a good long time to come......Jeff

Cool. I watched a boy learning to fly fish saturday. Never had seen the hatchery or Dry run so we took a look at it on Saturday.

What a great place to take a kid, nice big flat rocks to fish from, waders not neccesary. Don't expect to backcast, just an easy little flip cast with an indicator a couple feet up from your fly and you are catching fish! By all means take a net, I got to the top of our hill and had to turn around because I nearly forgot ours. If you have rubber boots and a long handled net you can get about anywhere on this creek, waders would help in some areas but you can get by without them.
