Leonard Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 This may come as a shock... When you are fishing for trout in the fall... the DO levels are normally low anyways... The fish will die if you fight them to long or to hard on light tippet... This is what I saw today.... This guy catches a really nice trout... 20/21incher (as he said.. "Probably his biggest trout ever!) He gets it in the net.. GREAT Job! he walk it up to dry land.. to take a picture.. he is on the bank for about 5 minutes.. Next I see him head up to the parking lot... 15 minutes later Im heading home... I see him in the parking lot and the fish is still in the net.. I asked "Are you taking it home?...... he replies "No... Im going to release it" I say "why the fish is already dead" This is what he says next... And I quote...... ***** " No its not.. Its gills are still pumping.. Im sure it will be fine ." ***** unquote ... so he is walking back down to the lake as Im leaving... NOTE!! I dont know of any fish that is able to survive 20 minutes out of the water!! WOW... http://www.taneycomonights.com
Members TArcher Posted September 27, 2011 Members Posted September 27, 2011 That's a bad deal! Just curious how long do the DO levels stay down usually? "There will be days when the fishing is better than one's most optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home."
Jack Jones Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Thank you for the reminder, or in the case of us novices, a bit of new info. I've enjoyed the fight on my 4wt down there, but under the circumstances, I'll likely switch up to my 6wt with a stronger tippet so I can get them to net quicker. I usually use 6x tippet on a 6x leader. Do you recommend moving up to 5x for either leader, tippet, or both? Im sure your safe with your set up.. just remember the big fish are moving in.. and you probably wont want to catch a 20lbs+ brown on a 4wt... although it sound like fun.. it would hurt the fish more then any thing......... at least you would have one for the wall! http://www.taneycomonights.com
Bman Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 That must have been the fish I saw down stream floating belly up. Very sad, I see so much abuse of fish. Disgusting. The only good line is a tight line
brother dave Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Shoulda picked it up after his live release and took it home to eat I shop at the outdoor grocery store
RSBreth Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Probably the same guy that likes to get up on his high horse and talk about how he's strictly a "catch and release" guy, too. Clueless moron - just keep the poor thing if you're gonna do that.
